I don't know if this is a problem for all of #Disqus, or just a problem at #PredictIt, but any post on PredictIt that contains a link to mastodon.social is being automatically flagged as spam.

I recently realized that my #blog, which is ad-free, was displaying ads because of #disqus. I hadn't noticed this before because I always use ad-blockers. Since I don't want ads on my blog, I have removed the comments. The purpose of my blog is not to make money from ads. Finally removed Google Analytics from my static #minimalmistakes #jekyll #blog

(it was already blocked by default - only if you accepted it it would load the js file). Dumped it all together. I haven't looked at the analytics in the last 10 years - I just post stuff.

Now looking to get rid of #disqus, but I'm not overly fond of either #staticman #giscus or #utterances.

I got a new export of my data from #Disqus via #OneTrust and it's... empty again.

At this point I want to dive deeper. Time to discover how to send a complain to the Data Protection Authority to see first hand how this #privacy stuff really works.

I spent a considerable amount of time working at the implementation of #GDPR. It was tedious and useless for the business. It's discouraging to see that not everyone takes this thing seriously.

Nachdem der Umzug von #KarlskronPolitik zum Jahreswechsel gut funktionierte, möchte ich jetzt gerne auch mit www.GadgetGedanken.de von #Blogger weg zu einer eigenen WordPress-Installation. Die Beiträge übertragen hat geklappt. Auch wenn noch sehr viel manuelle Anpassungen nötig sind.
Dummerweise hatte damals auf Disqus für Kommentare gesetzt. Daher nun die Notwendigkeit für einen Transfer.

@czr Welcome! I'm a recent immigrant to Fosstodon as well and yes, so far I've found good community here. Regarding #disqus I had it running on my site for a long time but never got as much engagement as I did years ago just hosting my own comments (strange). I decided eventually to not allow ANY commenting on my site so the pieces stand on their own and if folks want to discuss them they can keep that talk in whatever social media I post a link to it on. Just my thoughts!

Apparently, Windows 11 connects to 3rd parties even before the user opens a browser. Nice for #privacy!

One of these 3rd parties apparently is #Onetrust. I know that company because it is the one responsible for my data on #Disqus... the one that was unable to export my data after a month.

I was just informed that my blog was displaying ads in the comments section. I never noticed them because I use an ad blocker an all my devices.

Needless to say, it was never my intention to have ads on my blog. They were forced by #Disqus without my knowledge. As a result, comments are gone from my blog.

I guess it's now time for me to look for a new comment platform! This was long overdue anyway...

I got another reply from the #privacy support of #Disqus. They say that they cannot do anything because they don't own the data on other websites. Well... it sounds reasonable, but I'm requesting a copy of my data visible on their own portal.

Let's clarify the request even more (third round!).

I'm curious to see how deep is the rabbit hole of a #GDPR request.

So, #Disqus' support simply copy-pasted the FAQ providing the link to request the same thing from the #privacy portal.

Let's try again, but this time, I specify that I already got their archive and it was empty.

I find this experience very interesting since I spent weeks studying the #GDPR for my startup, and I was very worried about the risk of forgetting something. Then, when I try to download my data from a large company known worldwide...

I finally got my data from #Disqus. A link to a zip file that is downloadable with no authentication and that does not contain all my data.

There is no reference to
- nicknames
- comments
- connection to social networks
- the date when I joined
- the communities

All things visible in the profile.

Time to insist with the support.
