Hmm, I would like a definition of #Disruptive please? Is #Hype a synonym of Disruptive? If I remember correctly a chat bot existed years ago named Tai and it quickly praised Hitler. What is going on now is the same #chatbot that for now hasn't praised Hitler. So the hype around this chatbot is aimed exclusively for a corporations to increased their share price? For #theverge disruptive is making a corporation more wealthier? For the verge #Disruptive is synonym with #capitalism ?

I see people are still talking about that "science is getting less #disruptive" paper.

It is, of course, wrong in its interpretation because as usual scientists don't evaluate the profit taking systems that structure science and instead treat them like some natural phenomenon.

The results are trivially explained by the way citations are structured to prop up a prestige hierarchy of journals, I already wrote about this here about the last paper that said "science is slowing down" but y'all only read 15 page papers squarely within your discipline 🙃: https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2209.07493

I hadn't actually looked at the details of the #science is becoming less #disruptive paper (see here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05543-x), and only looked at it after reading Alex Usher's take on it (https://higheredstrategy.com/discovery-slowing/).

Now that I have, I gotta say: I think this paper tells us nothing about the #quality of science being done nowadays. Instead, it tells us much more about (1) the culture of #citations in science, and (2) the ease of finding and reading older papers.

...A disruptive technology that lined a lot of pockets before any meaningful effort to put boundaries on it, and by then it had gone mainstream. Entire societies forgot that there were other ways to do things, and chalked up the downsides of an exclusive focus on cars as the cost of modern life.

The metric used (CD index and CD5) is highly problematic.

If I am not mistaken, 2 examples with Figure 5 (Nobel Prize-winning papers): the #discovery of reverse transcriptase (paper in 1970 baltimore, 1975 Nobel) & mobile element (Paper in 1950 McClintock Nobel 1983) are measured as ......non-disruptive

How to be truly #innovative and #disruptive if you cannot freely use and combine what is already known? Plus that lots of finance especially in medical/biotech (VC and other private capital investors) goes towards building a strong patent position around a proprietary technology and "innovate within" to make money, rather than to truly push boundaries.
