@tazz602 it’s a bit longer of a history: the #Dixiecrats introduced the runoff for statewide elections in the 1960s because the feds gutted their right to use the “county unit system” in the Dem primary, and the runoff would rally white voters in the 2nd round against Black preferences. But when Dems got less racist and the GOP flipped a Senate seat in a runoff, they reduced the runoff threshold, but Republicans restored it in 2005 when they took the legislature.
