This is -Sapphire: a version of ICON developed at MPI-M with the support of to run at (sub)kilometer resolutions. At theses scales, we can get rid of parameterisations of convection, resolve mesoscale ocean eddies, and see interactions of small and large scales governing our climate.

In this flagship paper bit.ly/3IcNxnV we showcase our highest-resolution-ever fully-coupled Earth System Model. Find out why we've done it, how we've done it, and what we've achieved.

50 years ago the famous photo was taken and changed our perspective on Earth. We ourselves were able to simulate the fully coupled system at the scale of a km in October this year. Now, together with the German Climate Computing Center and NVIDIA , we simulated the iconic photo to celebrate this achievement.

Find the video, detailed information on the simulation, and the model on our website: mpimet.mpg.de/en/communication
