Another colour variation for the dwarf mountain map. I think I’ve finally cracked doing distressed old print text look on the iPad, I’ll do a tutorial soon, but for now I’m super pleased with the look of the text. I’ve got different versions of this map for purchase on my Etsy store, link on my website.

The central Duchies from this detailed map for a novel. The central lower kingdom is more built up and dominated by farmland which contrasts nicely with the hills and woods that surround it. Commission for alloraleanne on Twitter..

I have found that if I don’t sketch the map in 3d I tend to end up with something flatter than I wanted. Voxel drawing apps are a quick and easy way to solve this, they result in better maps and help communicate the 3d vision to the client.

It’s fun to look at other projections, which you can easily convert the equirectangular map into with free software such as G.Projector over at NASA. Here are a few, I’m thinking that I might draw a map this way at some point…

A bit of progress on the dwarf city cutaway geolocation schematics. I’m bored of hatching, and when I get bored I rush and it doesn’t look right so I think I’m going to start on some other bits. This is why video playbacks if my drawing are SO chaotic, I jump between parts of the map like a crazy person.

The cross section is full of interesting city and natural caverns for the reader to explore, and I plan to surround the main map with mini above view maps of bits of the city, and some technical drawings. The city is now a ruins, so I need to decide if the map represents that, as a survey of ruins, maybe archaeological or maybe it’s the original city blueprint. We will see how it turns out, as I said, very much an experiment.

One of the most memorable encounters with this tribe had the players trying to prevent a war with the local humans because one rich city merchant had gone mammoth trophy hunting! It was touch and go but the players managed to negotiate a settlement. Sadly the players rushed on and never enjoyed the dangerous hospitality of the orcs. I had all sorts of plans to present them with orc cultural experiences…Next time…
