The waxing gibbous Moon was so bright it casted shadows of trees. Nonetheless it was fun with the 8” #Dob. The star Vega was far from the Moon in the northeastern sky. Here is what I did for the night all star hopping from Vega with the finder scope: 1, slit the double double; 2, globular cluster M92; 3, globular cluster M13; 4, the ring nebular. Could even see some individual stars in M13! Saw the ring in the ring nebula clearly. So bight Moon does not stop the fun! #astronomy #Astrodon
Confirmed that I really saw the supernova #sn2023ixf in the Pinwheel Galaxy M101 with 8” #Dob Instead of SkySafari, this time I used a 2 min unstretched image from CloudyNights. Marked all relevant star patterns around the galaxy, and confirmed these patterns in the eyepiece. From the triangle of 10th mag stars towards the galaxy, found two stars, 12th mag and 11th mag. They form a nice triangle with the supernova. Its brightness is comparable to the 11th mag star! #Astrodon #astronomy

I think I spotted the supernova in the pinwheel galaxy M101 with the 8” #DOB ! Starting from Mizar, it was easy hop to M101 following a stream of fairly bright stars in the finder scope. The galaxy itself showed up as a hazy patch that was barely detectable. But there was a star that is not in SkySafary!! I mark where it showed up in the screenshot of SkySafary. It was visible with highest zoom of the eyepiece. Let’s see if this star fades in near future! #Astrodon #astronomy
Finally a clear sky with no haze, even if it was only 30 minutes between clouds! Easily located the Black Eye Galaxy starting from Arcturus with the finder scope only. 8” #Dob #B6/7 sky. Yesterday I was able to locate the nearby globular cluster M53 through haze. #astronomy #Astrodon
Saw M65 of Leo trio before Moon rise with the 8” #Dob in Bortle 6/7 sky. The key is to adjust the star magnitude shown in SkySafary to match the pattern seen in the finder scope. Then hop from a nearby bright star with the finder scope only. After it is certain the position is correct, use zoom eyepiece to detect the galaxy. Glad that the process is working out! #Astrodon
Yes!! Finally saw the Whirlpool Galaxy with 8” #Dob in the Bortle 6 sky! The key was the zoom eyepiece, Celestron 24-8 mm. The galaxy and its companion showed up as two distinctive patches of light only after enough zoom. Magnification improved contrast. It also helped that the galaxy was near zenith and there was no moon. #Astrodon
While imaging was running, I spotted M65 and M66 galaxies of the Leo Trio with the 4” tabletop Dob. I have seen more galaxies with this small 4” Dob at this Bortle 4 sky site in Pennsylvania than with the 8” Dob at Bortle 6/7 sky in New Jersey. Visual astronomy is so much easier in darker sites! #Astrodon #Dob
https://tonyflanders.wordpress.com/aperture-versus-light-pollution/ this blog explains well my experience with small and large aperture #Dob and bright and dark skies for visual astronomy. #Astrodon
Great night of star hopping! Finally saw the Whirlpool Galaxy with the 8” #Dob. It showed up as a hazy patch of light in the eyepiece, just above the detection threshold. Occasionally the two cores could be glimpsed. Meanwhile, the globular cluster M53 was clearly visible! Three galaxies and one globular cluster so far. #Astrodon

Getting better at star hopping with 8” Dob! Despite of half moon hanging high, I was able to quickly spot the Bode’s galaxy and the cigar galaxy by looking for star patterns in the finder scope. The two DSOs are located west of the star on top of the Big Dipper, Dubhe. From Danube, moving scopes west to the star pattern 1 then pattern 2, I found the galaxies clearly in the view of the 2” eyepiece! #Astrodon #Dob

Obviously it doesn't beat Dobs hilarious performance at his own wedding when confronted by a demon about his doubts. #Oxventure #dnd #LukeWestaway #Dob https://youtu.be/DG0MKc5Jy74?list=PLoid6oOAGqMcZ3YWFqABFXbx9l5edm6XK&t=3811

Sweetwater Union High School District in California recently notified some adult education students that there was a breach involving Google Workspace accounts that the district gives adult education students.
Of note: the majority of students never even set up their Google Drive accounts, but if they didn't even change the password when they got the account, their first and last name and date of birth would have been accessible or acquired. Sounds like the default system to create accounts uses the student's #DOB as part of the password.
