During 1920s, Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness formed partnership with American company to make powdered coal. Wouldn't need stoking, more akin to oil firing. Pneumosilicosis prevalent in coal miners - but seen as problem for workers later in life, 'acceptable' hazard. Idea wasn't a business success, and diesel dominated.
