I get people don't want to be bogged down in the #culturewar and #elections in hobby groups but we do need to be able to call out #dogwhistles. Take for instance the incident with a guy calling himself "Austrian Painter" who entered a #Warhammer tournament in Spain.

The problem with #nopolitics rules in hobby groups is that the exact boundary between what is political and what is just the way things are is itself a manifestation of political ideology. Bad actors can also use #dogwhistles and create a climate of exclusion while people calling them out for it are the ones seen as political.

This sequence is a perfect example of why "both-sideism" "balanced" journalism does not work when you give a platform to a bad faith actor, or known information war operative.

Even if they are telling the truth, they use that platform to plant #dogwhistles that they know will be amplified by a media landscape which thrives on virality.

Norm based ops such as #Dogwhistles seem ineffective through the lack of QRT (Twitter) by design, and #Mastodon social norms (again instance/community dependant, and instances can be isolated).

Identity based ops such as #Spoofing seems frowned up (social norms, eg: birdsite mirror feeds) and impersonations are moderated (banned) when flagged.

They employ a array of tricks, #pressReleases and #indoctrinattion disseminated in media and #hollywood is huge. They will often try to turn people against healthy things in Hollywood and steer people towards #snaleOil with supposed #health or #financial benefits in #forcedNews media.

The #children are most susceptible but a willfully ignorant adult is more dangerous.

#DogWhistles are #doubleBluffs to #trigger people.
