FAAS is making it easier than ever for volunteer dog walkers. FAAS's Maria Goodavage advises prospective walkers to stop by the shelter anytime from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. any day of the week for a drop-in walk. It will be the highlight of a shelter dog's day–and maybe yours too.

Dog and I strolled through the wetlands in the north of yesterday. We live nearby and that's one of our favourite walks. Sometimes the area is very wet, sometimes rather dry, but yesterday it was just great. I had to take off my shoes a couple of times to cross the puddles and got muddy black feet. For some years the area around Berlin is Germany's driest area now, so I'm very for the rain and moderate temperatures these days.

By way of I am a New Englander living in a town on Buzzards Bay where the Native Wampanoags were pushed aside in the mid-1600s by unruly European folk who were neither suitably devout nor upstanding enough to be allowed to remain with the Pilgrims in their village near Plymouth Rock.

I started poking gentle fun at similar fictional towns in the mid-1980s with a long-running series of weekly newspaper columns and monthly magazine articles. My love for mysteries stories began when I first read about Encyclopedia Brown and the Hardy Boys. I also fell down the rabbit hole of both historical and contemporary true crime via books on subjects ranging from Lizzie Borden and Jack the Ripper to Ted Bundy and Zodiac.

So now I'm writing a mystery novel set in the town of Baybury Shores, Massachusetts., which you can't get to from there.

A less usual sight, these masked lapwings (plovers) strolling along the waterline on the Brisbane river. It’s interesting how, fro a distance, despite their very recognisable faces they mostly disappear into the landscape.

Hawkmoth

I was a little surprised to find this 5cm hawkmoth sitting on a tree trunk in broad daylight, but closer inspection suggested that it was probably recovering after a close shave. Still a beautiful moth, probably Theretra species.

Here are two photos from eight years back, of another Illawarra flame tree with Hibiscus harlequin bugs on it. As you can see, they were everywhere, but appeared to be feeding on the mature, open seed pods.
