It's been really cool to have Oliver Sensei be a regular fixture in classes over the last 3 years. Some of his students have supplemented their classes with us as well. We've been able to train with #karateka from Australia, Okinawa, Argentina, Canada, Washington, California, Utah, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, and other parts of Texas.

When I got promoted to nidan (2nd degree), I was evaluated during live online classes over several weeks by 7-9 black belts from all over the world ranking anywhere from 3rd dan all the way to 7th dan. I was also able to join other classes to follow along with other #dojo and learn how they do things. It was an amazing experience!

It makes me sad that so many of my fellow #karateka stopped participating in online training and instruction once the pandemic was "over" (which it isn't). Most of them saw it as an inconvenience rather than the fantastic learning opportunity and federation bonding experience that it was. It isn't a substitute, it is a valuable supplement.

It's a real pity that it didn't stick.

Had a very small #karate class tonight - just one other person. But since we've kept our Zoom feed going even after returning to in-person training, we had the option to train at home and save my student about an hour of drive time. If the weather is bad, someone is not feeling well enough to be in the #dojo but still wants to train, doesn't have a ride, or has to travel out of town for some reason, they can still participate in class at some level.

I was thinking that one of the best things to come out of the pandemic was the explosive growth of video connection. We had to learn how to do stuff that we previously did in person while being locked down in our homes. One of the things I had to learn was how to do #karate from home. It wasn't the best, but it allowed us to keep training, oftentimes with people from around the country and world that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. I even got promoted during lockdown!

As beneficial as hybrid activities were proven to be, I've been really surprised at how quick people were to drop the remote component from all those things once things opened back up. Why go back to the unconnected way things were before and miss out on all the benefits that we realized when we had no other choice?

Some updates to our backyard #karate #Dojo!

As I explored Munich, I came across a small alleyway with an unmarked door. I continued on and discovered a second door marked as "dojo". I couldn't resist taking a picture of it, imagining the world of martial arts that lay beyond. Though I didn't go inside, that picture of the dojo door remains a reminder of the mystery and allure of that hidden place.
