So this past weekend I had the opportunity to educate my 10yo nephew about Super Mario Bros. 2 and Doki Doki Panic. Like, unironically and in earnest, I told him about SMB2J/Lost Levels, what happened with All-Stars on SNES, and how all of DDP's enemies were absorbed into the larger Mario franchise.

I've memed so much on SMB2/DDP in the past that I'd almost forgotten how truly fascinating the whole situation actually was.

Can we appreciate some absurdity for a moment? Game released in Japan. "Too hard" for American audience. Other game converted/shoehorned in and released in U.S.
Japanese audience doesn't want to miss out on "American" game. U.S. collector imports but needs a converter to play Japanese #Famicom game on original NES. Finally gets the equipment to play it after sitting on it for years, and discovers the game text is in English.
