#Domainblock Summary:
4 x Journalism / Media
2 x Parties
2 x State and Institutions
3 x Rightwing / Patriots
2 x I don't know anymore
Please, report state domains to block.
Well, I was able to find some of the people from mastodon.social I unfollowed by accidentally blocking the domain.
I opened a feature request to make blocking domains a bit harder. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/24853
#mastodon #block #DomainBlock #BlockList #MastoAdmins #spam #FeatureRequest #github #OpenSource
#mastodon #block #domainblock #blocklist #mastoadmins #spam #featurerequest #github #opensource
If you step into controversies or post anything about race, Russia or support #POC you are a likely target for trolls. And it will get worse over time...
This is a follow-up to the article I published
here: https://medium.com/@theghostoftomjoad/how-to-block-server-domains-in-mastodon-899b24f8fb6e

@theghostoftomjoad This is a follow-up to the article I published on HOW to upload your own personal blocked_domains.csv file to keep trolls off your mentions, DMs and timeline. This is an explainer on how to find or create a usable blocked_domains.csv file. NOTE: If you find this way too simple and you are a coder, great, maybe you can offer some open source scripts to help convert copypasta blocklists from instance "About pages" into .csv files suitable for upload. Or link us to some resources.
TL;DR: I am working up a selection of block lists from different admins and posting them on my github, for now. In the meantime, we have some lists going around based upon some sites. If you can't find them on our timelines DM & request or figure out for yourself how to go about doing that. I suggest you have a second account mainly for lurking which does NOT block many domains. When putting your views out to the public, though, you might prefer to use the more secured account to minimize the amount of harassment you will get in response if you really do speak to some of the core issues.

:bi_fire:β I'm getting a lot of positive feedback on my concept of individuals sharing and uploading domain blocklists. I wroteon Medium and Substack and described HOW to upload your own personal domain blocklist -- before, not after you get hit with nasty trolling. Because your admin can't anticipate every mean troll out there or that you might be the one to raise your head above the foxhole.
While I described HOW to upload a blocked_domains.csv file I did NOT describe is how to create a usable block list, which afaik has to be in the form of a .csv. with one line per domain and no surplusage.

:bi_fire: I'm getting a lot of positive feedback on my concept of individuals sharing and uploading domain blocklists. I wrote this up on Medium and Substack and described HOW to upload your own personal domain blocklist -- before, not after you get hit with nasty trolling.
What I did NOT describe is how to create a usable block list, which has to be in the form of a .csv.
:bi_fire: The easiest approach is to copy existing blocklists which some but not all admins publish on their instance "About" page. However, these are not in single-line .csv format.
Some people will know how to write scripts to convert them, and others will be able to manually edit them down in notepad or gedit or some other simple text editor.
You can also find a spreadsheet linked at the climatejustice About page. All you need to do for that one is copy and paste it into your own version of Excel or Libre Office, isolate the column, and paste it into the proper .csv format.
:bi_fire: There are others who publish comprehensive blocklists. For instance, Nathan at mastodon.lol does not fuck around and he lists most of the domain names in full text. -However, you will need to use the Find-Replace function in your word processor to remove the excessive verbiage and create the necessary stripped down .csv file.
:bi_fire: Pro-active domain blocking is necessary because the admins have to balance the needs of thousands of people, some of whom may prefer more "free speech". New admins get conflicting advice from veteran admins about what should or should not be blocked. Indeed, many of the OG admins block each other.
For instance, scholars.social blocks domains >10,000 accounts on the theory that moderation is not possible with larger instances; nevertheless, the well-known admin at mastodon.social seems to be providing content that most admins would not want to block.
OTOH qo.to admin has been pleading to be unblocked as many admins vehemently disagree with its' COC.
New admins can't really know who to believe; they don't want to over-block and censor anyone's experience; they can understandably going to respond to harassment complaints as they arise.
:bi_fire: That, however, is a reactive approach. People who are outspoken but value peace may have need for tighter blocking and moderation than folks who just want to trade cat pictures and avoid controversy. And mark my words - if you make a stand for principle, you will be waving a red flag for some nasty trolling.
:bi_fire: Many even look forward to the opportunity for posting "instance-only". Which, essentially, is a #domainblock against the entire #fediverse.
:bi_fire: My philosophy is that there are thousands of instances with thoughtful, creative and interesting people.
For now, I personally am happy to block the hundreds of instances with bad actors or poor moderation. If you could see some of the harassming DM's and replies that have already penetrated the administrative firewalls, you would be appalled and understand that preference.
:bi_fire: A solution that may work for some is to have two or more #mastodon accounts; one for comfortable fireplace chats with a civil, screened group of #Mastodonians, and another for the wild wild west of the fediverse.
:bi_fire: I am not keen on publishing my personal blocklist of 262 domains...yet.
First I must sort them and write up descriptors & disclaimers and instructions so I am not in the role of a censor.I am not qualified to suggest which domains should or should not be blocked. All I can do is boil down the existing lists into usable .csv files and indicate where they came from and what the seasoned admins have had to say about the domains in question.
:bi_fire: But for those who do prefer a quieter, calmer experience, reply here or (SM me if it goes through) and I will expedite an inside track to get the material to you privately on a pre-publication basis or as a limited-publication preview.

I suggest admins block the domain mastodon.teia.art. It is the social arm of a NFT platform.
