: , by - so far, immaculately written, terse, witty thriller from the 1960s when the scene was starting to wreak its havoc. Wikipedia: "Westlake wrote constantly in his teens, and after 200 rejections, his first short story sale was in 1954… an American writer, with more than a hundred novels and non-fiction books to his credit." @bookstodon

Published in 1960 The Cutie (AKA The Mercenaries and The Smashers) was Donald E. Westlake's first crime novel although he'd written a lot of sleaze fiction before that.

The narrator/protagonist is an interesting anti-hero. He’s a hired thug and killer but he's loyal efficient and intelligent, educated and civilised. He's not a straightforward hero nor is he a straightforward villain.

Good stuff.

Okay, this is a bit off-topic, but has anyone one here read the 'Parker' novels by Richard Stark? (They were written by Donald E. Westlake under the pen name Richard Stark.) I got hooked on them several years ago, and slowly began acquiring as many as I could find through various used bookstores. I now have the whole collection, and I've been reading them in sequence.

Last night I finished #19 in the series (out of 24). It's called "Flashfire" and WOW is it good. It has to be one of my two or three favorite Parker novels, at least to this point. So, does anyone else read these?
