I did my best to convey the bad taste of seaside Britain, with my postcards series this week.

Excruciatingly awful: Britain at its best. 😬

As we've seen, Donald McGill's seaside donkeys were mainly drawn as caricatures, but this sketch shows more natural observation.

Maybe he saw a real beach donkey that was cheekily sticking its tongue out? The sketch reminds me of my donkey Morris who always stands around with his tongue hanging out!

I had planned two more donkey postcards to end the McGill week, but they have not been popular. Maybe I'll finish with this one?

The date of this Donald McGill seaside postcard is uncertain: the striped blazer suggests 1930s seaside wear? Again we have the recurring McGill donkey motif.

For non-native speakers of English: "back to front" is the wrong way round (sitting in reverse) and also "back to the front" means returning to the seaside: the sea front. Postcards advertise to the recipient that the sender is on holiday.

Another popular Donald McGill seaside postcard of the early 1950s, using his recurring donkey motif.

For non-native speakers of English: a bottle of stout is associated with a northern English industrial working class drinking culture of the period: a dark malt beer.

See the ALT-text description and comments.

The donkey motif was a recurring image in Donald McGill's seaside postcards. In this example we see some primitive wordplay at work (see the ALT-text description and comments).

For non-native speakers of English, a 'blow on the front' at the seaside means a walk in the sea breeze. A blow can also mean being knocked or in this case kicked.

This is the first in a week of DotD donkey pictures celebrating the 'saucy' seaside postcards of (1875-1962).

He illustrated 12,000 postcards. In a 1941 essay about them George Orwell wrote: "Your first impression is of overpowering vulgarity. This is quite apart from the ever-present obscenity..." Indeed McGill was once prosecuted for obscenity!

In this DotD series on I'm exploring only the donkey theme. For further comments see picture alt-text.
