The American #RedCross is adopting new guidelines that will change who is eligible to donate blood. It's following the lead of the U.S. #FDA, which altered long-standing rules about gay and bisexual men. For decades, the FDA said it was trying to protect the blood supply from HIV by restricting donations from #gay and #bisexual men. But now, instead of using sexual orientation, the agency is focusing on sexual behavior.

Donated blood today at #Boston Children's Hospital. And, this is my plea to you to donate if you are eligible.

I prefer the double red cell donation, which gives twice the amount of red blood cells and allows you to donate every 16 weeks instead of every 8.

But, either way, it's an easy way to #SaveALife #DonateBlood

I went to donate blood this afternoon. I say "went" because when answering their questions, it turned out where I'd been in France at the beginning of July was subject to a mosquito-borne tropical virus and they couldn't accept blood within 28 days of a visit to the area.

I'm all for keeping people safe - I was just a bit surprised!

I have been a long time campaigner against the Red Cross' decision to disallow donations from the GBT community.
I have had many conversations with them regarding this decision and have been disappointed each time that they had chosen to brush of my concerns.
Many people in the community are unaware of this as are many staff at the Australian Red Cross.

With a big campaign like this, hopefully we can begin to change hearts and minds and ensure we have enough life saving blood to save more lives.
