In the last few days, donkey Kwiatek and pony Trotsky spent a lot of time together.

They were standing closely next to each other and even eating together. Normally Trotsky shoos him away and Kwiatek is overall not comfortable standing too close to the horses.

Equine update!
At lunch, Samwise came up for scritches all over. Much to his surprise, he even picked up his front feet, very briefly, for me. I rewarded him by instantly dropping the foot, praising him like crazy, and scratching somewhere neutral. Just for good measure, I gave a quick demo on Miss D, too - yes, see, that’s exactly what I want! See how it’s no big deal for her! Managed to get both fronts. Things are moving fast with him now.
At flock o’clock, Miss D led the way again. She wriggled all around until she’d gotten everything groomed that needed it. And she didn’t try to monopolize my attention.
Both of them kept an attentive eye on the treeline. I’m not sure if the coyote’s cubs have moved on yet, or if the equines had sensed *the bear.* Yes, I said bear!! Yesterday I was talking to the uphill neighbors over the fence, and they said they’ve seen three piles of fresh bear scat in the woods behind our houses. I’ve never seen a bear! I don’t really want to see a bear in my meadow, but I’ll be excited if I do!
I don’t think it’s likely to come up to the house. The blackberries are ripe, and we don’t have anything better than berries close to the house. And I’d rather worry about an omnivore bear than a carnivore lion.

#Donkey breakthrough!
I was out supervising my chickens in the meadow before they went to bed in the coop, and the equines came up hassling me for scritches. Miss D was most insistent at first, and she even let me scratch her face for a bit. So when Samwise came up, I decided I’d try to scratch his head.
I’ve been working on scratching him all over when he comes up and asks for back scratches in the mornings. We’ve just gotten past the irrational flinching stage and he’s starting to consider that it feels nice to have fingertips touch his legs. I wasn’t expecting to get too far with his head, but *they* were the ones hassling *me* for attention.
At first he did the thing where he stood very close to me, but with his head curled protectively toward the far side of his body, just in case it’s a trap. I scratched his poll, told him he was silly, switched back to the mare. When it was his turn again, I worked on his poll until he unbent his neck a bit, then switched back to the (indignant - why do I keep touching the donkey?) mare. The third time, I scratched the ligaments at the base of his ear, and he froze. I worked my way up to his ear tip and thought “I’ve got you now, my boy.” When I stuck a finger in his ear canal, the donkey’s *eyeball quivered* in ecstasy. Hahah! Not just a donkey herder, a donkey *friend.*

SO I would think "Sure there HAS to be some" .. actually can't find any specific #equine #toothpaste I can only find some #dog toothpaste but I am looking for something NOT having any chicken/beef/fish flavour. I want to try to clean the #donkey teeth before to maybe have her checked. Don't tell me nobody washes a horse's teeth ???

I thought they were up to no good, so I waited an extra long time before chicken bedtime. I found a few more perfect green beans to snack on, and I even went halfsies on them with Samwise. (Miss D prefers cucumbers.)
When I finally opened the garden gate, first the #horse then the #donkey had to come see if they could wander past me into the garden, and when I told them they shall not pass, each of them ran off the chickens back into the garden! But the third time I coaxed the flock back through the gate, they made it to their coop.
Then, of course, I spent a long time sweet talking my old lady. I’ve promised her a spa day tomorrow - I’ll use the angle grinder to trim her hooves, and I’ll brush her itchy shedding coat out as much as she wants.
It constantly surprises me that Miss D is 21! I got her when she was five! The only other person who’s been in my life longer is my spouse. It’s such a privilege to grow old with a horse.

Went out and picked my biggest mixing bowl full of #blackberries to make jelly. Yes, jelly! I don’t like the bits in jam so I bought the strainer setup and I’m going to make *jelly.*
I had a #donkey stalker while I was checking out this lil #bee. Ze was snagged on a spider web and while I helped free em, Samwise snuck up to see if I really wanted that whole entire bowl of berries. Yeah, I do, sorry buddy!

Today’s #coyote and #equine update:
After Samwise broke himself and Miss D out and didn’t founder, I decided they could stay out in the meadow for a while. I feed them a little snack of diet pellets and sunflower seeds three times a day - Miss D bellows at me if I forget. But otherwise, the gate is open and they wander in and out of their paddock at will.
They’re doing a very sensible job of walking around eating lots of different stuff, not just eating the green spots down to dirt. They’re very happy. And they’re also decent anti-coyote guards.
I’ve asked them, with lots of gesturing and words they both know, a couple of times now to guard the #chickens and run the coyotes off. Donkeys are supposed to be guard animals, and I know Miss D won’t take shit from any canine. And maybe it’s working! Today I walked into the bathroom a second too late to see *what* Miss D was chasing into the big cypress tree, but she was gonna bite its ass if it slowed down. Sometimes the #donkey shoves his way into there to scratch himself or nap, but he’d kick her in the teeth for that, so I’m pretty sure it was an uppity coyote pup. No chickens! Y’all gotta move out! There’s plenty of timberland up the hill behind us, they’ll be ok.
I found a couple of poopy eggs, so I walked them down to the coyote corner. I don’t mind sharing my imperfect eggs - I used to compost them but she’d just dig them out. When I turned around to walk back to the garden, Nightlight had bravely followed me down. She was very clearly feeling at least three things at once: scared to come this close to the coyotes’ territory, mad about being scared about them, and protective toward me. She was all poofed out, stiff tailed, glaring molten gold fury at me - and if we’d stayed a few minutes longer, she would’ve peed to mark her territory. I’ve seen her do it before! My little tiger, please don’t taunt the direwolves. I took her back home and made sure she came in.
