Aitana was the main focus for the farrier's work on all the donkeys' hooves today. She has had historic problems with front tendons and the hooves need repositioning every few months. Jacobo the farrier has done great job again, so Aitana can now descend slopes more comfortably.

As she grows in confidence, she puts up more of a fight and the hoof trimming was accompanied by angry snorting, stamping and rearing. Quite a circus!

This was part of the Peasant's morning talk to the donkeys, explaining that trees must not be chewed. Never. But especially during the present drought as the trees are weak are vulnerable. So we must all act responsibly in a crisis.

At this time of year oranges and lemons are ripe here in Spain but it is very noticeable all across the region that fruit and vegetable production is declining, as this becomes the region of Europe that is facing most serious water stress. The current drought will affect supply of produce to northern Europe this summer.

This month the Donkey Sanctuary is launching plans for a one-year project in Nepal to help improve the lives of donkeys and mules and those who depend on them for their work. The Nepal One Welfare Fund.
