On the menu today, Celeriac and Fennel Soup, and Aloo Tamatar Sabji (Baby Tomatoes with Spicy Tomato Sauce). The former from #OnePanPerfect by #DonnaHay and the latter from #ArtOfIndianVegetarianCooking by #YamunaDevi (aka #LordKrishnasCuisine )

I adore Devi's book - she spent decades learning Vedic cooking, and cooking for Srila Prabhupada. I have never had a recipe fail. It's a huge book.

It is baked feta with tomatoes and eggplant tonight, with some sourdough to mop up the juices and spread any melty feta on. There will be a scattering of herbs.

This one is more of a tray-bake than other baked fetas I make. In the others I put the feta into a small terracotta dish and fill the spaces tight with cherry tomatoes, olives, capsicum.

Both versions are drizzled with olive oil. Tonight's tray-bake also has some red wine vinegar mixed with the OO.

This is the perfect home-cooking (especially week night) cooking book. Whether you have Burger night, Curry night or Schnitzel night (or a night for any of the other4 topics), there are 5 variations so you'll never get bored. Along with salads and rice bowls you have a complete course. Add a cake, fruit dessert, instant pudding, sweet treat or icy treat for dessert.

Hidden away between chapters are recipes for dips, salsas, slaws, pasta, smoothies, yoghurts, and more.

This really is a fabulous and exciting book for busy home cooks who want variation within a regular approach with food that will appeal to the whole family.

Totally recommended.

The Fast Five / Donna Hay

The chapters in this book alternate between dark grey pages, and lighter beige/oatmeal pages. It is quite effective, except that you could not scribble your notes on the dark pages 😢 .

It is lavishly illustrated. The pages are matt. There is a great extensive glossary at the end of the book, explaining ingredients - perfect for newby cooks. There are also 2 pages of amount conversions and temperature conversions.

The index is easy to read (good font size) and very workable.

I've not really been a follower of Donna Hay, except that I gave my granddaughter her cookbook for Kids (Basics to Brilliance Kids). It was perfect for her, she loved cooking and this was at her level.

I am also a fan of this book, which has come across my desk.

Recipes: There are 151 recipes, and Donna pays attention to vegetarians, so there are 107 meat- fish- and egg- free dishes. A super ratio! 💃

It took me a while to work out what the "Fast Five" is. It doesn't really say upfront. In each of the 10 savoury chapters and 5 sweet ones, there are 5 quick and easy (and tasty) recipes.

For example, the Meatball chapter has 3 meat-based recipes , Kale Lemon and Parmesan Meatballs, and Spicy Cashew Tofu Meatballs (both vegetarian).

It's a great format!
