Winter is an important time for every species of butterfly and moth, no matter what stage of the lifecycle they are in πŸ› πŸ¦‹

We need to let them rest and keep them safe so they can make it through to spring. So hold off on the hedge cutting, leave stems sticking out and step away from the rake!

Here are our top tips for helping butterflies and moths this winter πŸ‘‰ butrfli.es/3XDtC7t

If you find a dormant Peacock in your home the best thing to do is to move them to an outhouse or shed, and leave the window open so that when it becomes warmer, they have a clear way to flutter out. 🏑

Be chilled with nature! Peacocks are the ultimate laid-back butterfly species in winter.

They are one of the few butterflies that overwinter as adults, but as they rely on external sources of heat, they are forced to remain inactive and therefore lie dormant until the warmer weather arrives. β˜€οΈ

Several Small Tortoiseshells now are hibernating in a nettle/comfrey patch on the edge of our garden, waiting for lavender time to emerge. As I look out at the untidy winter mess the garden is in, I’m happy to follow @savebutterflies advice! Untidy gardens can provide insects with a safe haven from cold & predators, so leave the leaf litter, keep the branches & let plant stems go uncut this winter.

Relax and give nature a chance! πŸ› πŸ¦‹

Orange-tip butterflies overwinter as a chrysalis. They are known to hang from plant stems, so it’s important to leave the strimming for later in the year. They can also be found on other hard surfaces such as fences, so try to leave them hanging out in peace.
