I found accepting the reality of the way I hyperfocus to be more beneficial than trying to force my brain to be different. I just have special interests that I pick up and put down every few months or years, with no interaction with it in between.

I find my unwanted hyperfocus is worse when I am not doing well mentally. Like you, I will just doom scroll or be hyperfocusing. In those cases the hyperfocus isn't even about enjoyment, but giving me reprieve from other awful feelings. The hyperfocus itself can feel bad at times or disruptive, but I do find if I look at my wellbeing bigger picture, it is helping me run away from worse things. So I try to address the other stuff if I can. When I am more well, my hyperfocuses are much more enjoyable and sustainable.

My only tried and true hack to escape hyperfocus/doomscroll spiral temporarily (so I can rest) is to listen to podcasts I have already heard several times, while I walk outside. It has to be something I've already heard before or it doesn't work. The familiarity and security it provides seems to give my brain the off ramp so I can rest for a day.

This isn't anti-viral: it's user-unfriendly limitations playing on the same #doomscrolling, addictive behaviors fostered by the ad-driven corporate silos.
Is this what we want for the #Fediverse?
I doubt it.
Maybe, instead of designing the Fediverse around the same behavioral patterns of the surveillance capitalist trap, it would have been better to think about it just a little more and realize that even before those we had better examples on how to do things.
