#Security #cams can serve legitimate #safety and #security needs, but the doorbell camera subcategory too easily serves illegitimate ("nosy", "concerned" neighbors) and illegal (warrantless #police and #corporate viewing) purposes.

Yesterday, I went to pick my child up from a play date. The family had one of those doorbell cameras. At first, I pushed the bit where the camera is rather than the bell.

I am young enough to know better!

I don't like those bloomin' things!

I wonder what notification is sent when a person hits the camera instead of the bell?! 🤣 I probably don't want to know! 😉

Much urban doorbell activity speaks of the need for quick fixes — and the results of uninformed, poorly planned ones. The situation here could very well be evidence of casual vandalism. It could also be a quiet moment in the midst of just the sort of jury-rigged, duct-taped upgrades that pedestrians become either inured to or, in my case, fascinated by. Perhaps the tenant or owner is currently at the local hardware store, sorting out a selection. Given the haphazard angle of the board and the monochromatic palimpsest of prior attempts, it's more likely this will look the same, if not worse, on my next stroll.

As it's good news day here, we've just finished a long-term project restoring an antique (no idea how old) cast iron doorbell for my sister. It was in a terrible state but, of course, I forgot to take a photo of that! The bracket was a mass of rust and the bells were dark brown corrosion and nothing else. My Dad had been intending to restore it but he died before he could, so it was quite an emotional thing to do.

My house came with this doorbell, a mid-80s Friedland Maestro 'vibrato' unit, which had at the time been replaced with a wireless chime - as this one didn't work.

If I recall correctly, required cleaning carbon from the contact and some resetting of the 'points'. I also had to replace the exterior buttons, (now illuminated) and change out the transformer.

Either way, it works since! link has a video example of the chime.

Buying puppies or goods in #Amish country with bad checks is an interesting #con. It is less traceable because Amish are not (yet?) known for splurging on #Ring #doorbell cameras and smart phones.

On the bright side, the impact is limited because you can't use bad checks to buy #Prada, #Lambos and other superfluous expensive crap from the Amish.
