"As a general rule, #people, even the wicked, are much more naïve and simple-hearted than we suppose. And we ourselves are, too." - Fyodor #Dostoevsky, The Brothers #Karamazov.

An excerpt from the book, Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky, written in 1864. Imagine that his thoughts over 150 years ago still can be so relevant today. Thinking of all those individuals who have so little to say & gets the incredible attention of hundreds of thousands of followers while those who really do have the knowledge & expertise and can add value & insights have to stand back. #dostoevsky #author #book

A third of the way into The Brothers Karamazov and wondering when the inane religious conversations are going to stop. Does it get better? I read Crime and Punishment 50 years ago and remember it as a classic. This is very difficult. To finish or to abandon that is the question.

So, I finished The Gambler by #Dostoevsky (cheapo Spanish edition, no named translator, full of typesetting mistakes), and it was a fun, though obviously rushed book.
The first half has a rather normal pace, while the second goes at a breakneck pace, but in a clever way.
I found the protagonist very entertaining, though incredibly stupid. At other times I would have thought him annoying...
So, recommended, but try to get a decent edition.
In other book-related things: yesterday I made what is going to be my last ever purchase from #BookDepository: #CrimeAndPunishment by #Dostoevsky in the P&V translation, Everyman's Library edition.
Now I'll just have to wait.

humiliations that are often casual, often astonishing low points in their writing, byproducts of a certain conformism to social norms, an overlooking or blindness to historical injustices, of the thoughtless acceptance of accumulated capital’s accumulated suffering.https://limitedinc.blogspot.com/2023/04/the-underground-reader.html #Dostoevsky #underground

March 31, 1809: Nikolai Gogol, the Russian-Ukrainian novelist, was born. Gogol was one of the first authors to use surrealism and absurdism (see “The Nose,” “The Overcoat,” and “Nevsky Prospekt.”) He influenced several generations of writers, including Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, Kafka and Flannery O’Connor. The gypsy punk band, Gogol Bordello, took their name from him.

A young woman jumps out of a window, leaving behind her husband, an antiques dealer. Sitting in their bedroom with the body lying in state, the widower remembers her. In his memory, she is nameless, abstract, a state not a life. This is Une femme douce [A Gentle Woman] (Robert Bresson, 1969), closely adapted from Fyodor #Dostoevsky's A Gentle Creature (1876).

“In #Dostoevsky the characters and situations always stand for more than themselves; infinity attends them; though yet they remain individuals they expand to embrace it and summon it to embrace them; one can apply to them the saying of St. Catherine of Siena that God is in the soul and the soul is in God as the sea is in the fish and the fish is in the sea.”
