#DOTD in 1953: Emmy Andriesse, photographer. During #WWII, she was a member of the Amsterdam-based resistance group De Ondergedoken Camera (‘The Underground Camera’). She took photographs of the ‘Hunger Winter’ of 1944-45 and the ruins of the Jewish Quarter (right, circa 1944).

#DOTD in 1962: David van Embden, Professor of Economics and Statistics and liberal politician. Mostly known for his campaigning for national #disarmament in the interwar period. Gave his vote to the defence budget in March 1940, two months before the German invasion.

I'm not sold on the tacky fotoromanzo-style cover of my copy of A PAIR OF BLUE EYES (1873). And it's not my favourite Thomas Hardy novel. But still, I did enjoy it. The novel is famed for originating the term #Cliffhanger: chance, coincidence, and heart in mouth moments make for a gripping & ultimately sad & tragic story. It's always a melancholy pleasure reading #ThomasHardy, who #DOTD 11 January 1928.
