von Frederick Douglass

Was bedeutet es, ohne jegliche #Persönlichkeitsrechte der #Willkür eines anderen Menschen ausgeliefert zu sein? Frederick #Douglass wurde 1817 oder 1818 als #Sklave im US-amerikanischen Bundesstaat #Maryland geboren. Eindringlich beschreibt er seine ersten 20 Lebensjahre, in denen er als Sklave unter verschiedenen Herren diente, bevor ihm schließlich die Flucht nach New York und damit in die #Freiheit gelang. Unter widrigen Bedingungen und gegen den Willen seiner #Sklavenhalter hatte sich Douglass in seiner Kindheit und Jugend selbst das Lesen und Schreiben beigebracht. Nach der #Flucht in die Freiheit legte er seine Erfahrungen in diesem Bericht dar.

Er gibt persönliche Einblicke in das #Unrechtsregime der #Sklaverei in den amerikanischen #Südstaaten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Der Bericht spiegelt, was es heißt, als #Eigentumsobjekt einer anderen Person geboren zu sein, von familiären Bindungen losgelöst aufzuwachsen und einer permanenten fremden #Verfügungsgewalt über den eigenen Körper und die #Arbeitskraft ausgesetzt zu sein. Douglass’ Bericht und seine weiteren Tätigkeiten als Schriftsteller und Politiker folgten von nun an vor allem einem Zweck: das grausame #Unrecht der Sklaverei zu benennen und für ihre Abschaffung zu kämpfen.

When Frederick Douglass wrote that what was needed in the face of racism was 'scorching irony' rather than 'convincing arguments', he was drawing attention to the point that although argument may elicit aspect-change, it is often the rhetorical form of the argument that is doing the work & it is not the only and often not the best way of bringing about aspect-change.
