-Zev Feldman is not a better or more important producer than Manfred Eicher or Don Was.

-No room for Vince Mendoza on the Arrangers list? Instead we get Django Bates and William Parker (seriously, William Parker, who should be in a separate list for Best Disarranger).
-There must be some graft going on in the record label list. Pyroclastic Records #3, right under ECM? Mosaic at #13? Pi Recordings at #4, but Impulse! at #20?

Thoughts about the 2023 #downbeat critics poll:

-Esperanza Spaulding is not a better vocalist than Jazzmeia Horn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Veronica Swift, or especially Dianne Reeves. She's a creative player and composer, but her voice is water-thin and reedy, and she's a one-trick pony with her phrasing. (Spaulding deserves better than coming in at #20 for composer.)
-Jose James and Giacomo Gates are not more accomplished, creative, or more historically important vocalists than Bobby McFerrin.

-The guitar list is full of creative stars, and that instrument is in good hands for this generation. But Julian Lage is not a more important guitarist than John Scofield or Pat Metheny.
-Linda May Han Oh is not a better bass player than Ron Carter. (And why isn't Ron Carter on the Hall of Fame short list?)

-WHERE THE HELL IS LONNIE SMITH ON THE ORGAN LIST??? HE DOESN'T MERIT BEING ON THE TOP 20 GREATEST LIVING JAZZ ORGANISTS? HE'S BOOTED TO MAKE ROOM FOR JARED GOLD, RHODA SCOTT, AND JAMIE SAFT, WHOEVER THEY ARE? AND WHY IS CARLA BLEY ALWAYS ON THIS LIST? SHE HARDLY PLAYS ORGAN, AND ONLY A FEW NOTES WHEN SHE DOES TO ADD COLOR TO HER BAND. AND WAYNE HORVITZ AND CRIAG TABORN ARE ON THIS LIST (AND ARE BETTER ORGANISTS THAN LONNIE SMITH)?

-FINALLY the critics rubbed their collective eyes and got Robert Glasper off the top of the piano list. He's #3 on the keyboard list instead, where Herbie Hancock rightly reigns on top. I still kind of suspect Kris Davis is somehow stuffing the piano poll ballot box. Seriously, is she a better and more important pianist than Brad Mehldau, Ahmad Jamal, Herbie Hancock, or Vijay Iyer? And it's cool to see Sullivan Fortner on the list, but at #4?

-Melissa Aldana is a great tenor sax player, but generally much overrated IMHO. She's certainly not better than Joshau Redman, Branford Marsalis, or Pharoah Sanders.

-Ever heard of Elna Pinderhughes? She's a better flute player than Hubert Laws, apparently.

Thoughts about the 2023 #downbeat critics poll:

-There are lots of great alto sax players these days. I wouldn't place newcomer Immanuel Wilkins at #1 until he's paid some more dues, though. Committed lifers like Kenny Garrett and Gary Barz deserve to be higher up the list. Miguel Zenon or Rudresh Mahanthappa could slice Wilkins to shreds in a jam session on "Cherokee" (not that it's the universal standard for such things, but still).

Some thoughts about the 2023 #downbeat critics poll:-Darcy James Argue's Secret Society is NOT the 8th best big band. They are one of the few doing wildly creative stuff. Who the hell is "Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra"? They're ranked higher.
-I like Jane Bunnett, but she's not a better soprano sax player than Branford Marsalis. And what is Chris Potter doing anywhere on the soprano sax list? He hardly ever plays it.
