On the first real day of birding, there was a #YellowWarbler being very photogenic, as well as a #SpottedTowhee looking fabulous and a male #DownyWoodpecker checking out some #RedBreastedSapsucker holes in a tree.

On Monday a #BlackCappedChickadee was busily excavating little wood chips from a nest cavity high up in an alder trunk. This morning there was a #DownyWoodpecker pair working away at the same cavity. I think they stole it!

Sweetgum Tree.

I was looking through my red-bellied woodpecker photographs and I came across some downy woodpecker photos from the fall, misfiled. So, I decided to do the downy instead.

In this photo, the sweetgum tree limbs and are really in focus. The downy woodpecker is not, it is slightly out of focus.

These woodpeckers are small and, so far, I only see them deep in the forest. I've read that they visit feeders but, I haven't seen one.

The smallest woodpecker in North America, common & widespread, although it avoids the arid southwest. In the east this is the most familiar member of the family, readily entering towns & city parks, coming to backyard bird feeders. Its small size makes it versatile, & it may forage on weed stalks as well as in large trees. In winter it often joins roving mixed flocks of chickadees, nuthatches, & others.

FYI: can't talk, just tweek, whinny, drum.

I see downy woodpeckers only occasionally, and then only far away in the woods. I've mentioned before that I'm beefing up my backyard and hope to lure more woodpecker species closer to the house. Right now, though, with all the rain my backyard is a mess. There are muddy parts that my dogs just must track through before they come in the house. 🐾🐾🐾

Downy Woodpecker

I believe this is a male downy woodpecker. I found it moving in a forest oak tree. It was in the top small branches moving, stopping and doing something, pecking, then moving on to another branch. Eventually, it moved on to another tree and I lost sight of the bird.
