hmm, sort of seems like something pretty bad is about to happen
hmm, for whatever reason now I'm beginning to doubt Seward's actual ability for verbatim recollection; he's probably at least getting the gist of it though
wow, lots of… language… being used to-day; pretty great that ART rushes back home just in time to be promptly desanguinated (that’s what he gets for reading between lines)
—& wow, Seward apparently has a preternatural ability for verbatim recollections (matched only perhaps by Mina; but he doesn’t write shorthand, though? definitely just a grudge keeper nonpareil, I'd guess)
today's two entries juxtapose nicely
Seward is a bit more succinct than Mina at conveying the moment-to-moment of Lucy’s status but he’s probably paying by the word here; I imagine that he would otherwise be more (or even more!) scribacious.
sometimes limitations (like character limits!) can be good for people though, I've learned…
the way Seward’s language changes succeeding his visit with Miss Westenra is, um, noticeable.
sort of seemed early in the day that his mood had somewhat stabilized following Helsing’s visit; but by midnight he’s right back to melodramatically noting (just as an aside, mind you) “the grim sternness of my own cold stone building, with its wealth of breathing misery, and my own desolate heart to endure it all.”
lol. the days do just sort of wear people down I guess
actually didn’t know that Van Helsing was from Dracula (absolutely makes sense in retrospect, but—) & having a comic book hero suddenly just skate into the story is pretty jarring; that is all
hm, I mean:
this all seems like a pretty big ask on ART’s behalf (w/ consideration to foregoing events) & this all seems vaguely unprincipled (mostly being so couched in secrecy as it is) but honestly, given everything else Seward’s been up to (which is quite a lot!) he is probably, technically, the most eligible Doctor of Medicine available to gauge Lucy’s current condition; so there’s that (…but ART doesn’t actually know any of that so there’s that too, I guess)
"she has no special disease" ; yeah ok ART.
I wasn't sure what Lucy's motives were for lying to Mina in yesterday's letter but now I'm confident in assuming that it was just so that her worry-prone friend wouldn't be obliged to worry about her while abroad; & that is pretty wrenching.
Lucy is ok? hmm, what great news!
(I imagine she's probably not very wan-looking at all then!)
"ghastly pale" certainly sounds like a step down from "sadly pale," sure, but what of her cheeks? & Lucy doesn't even bother to mention whether or not she is wan??
(I imagine she's probably pretty wan-looking!)
transactional writing from early–pre 20th century English business communication is honestly a fucking treat for anyone to just read aloud & always sounds perfect no matter who’s doing it or how they’re doing it; fact
it's really very good of Mina to keep us all current on the moment-to-moment for how rosy/not rosy Lucy’s cheeks are!
why the fuck does Dracula need so much dirt; is vampire dirt quantitative or is he just being weird about it
all told, it’s been a pretty bad vacation
it wouldn’t be weird if Dracula could only change into either a dog or a bat but it’s weird that he can change into both a dog & a bat—& the degree to which it is weird is dependent upon whether or not he can change into any other animal additionally; which is to say: the more animals Dracula can change into then the less weird it is but then if he can only change into one type of animal, then it is not weird at all...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
