@daftaupe @screwtape and succeeding!!
You guys have been doing an awesome work for the last years, always improving upon your previous work!.
Always pushing #dsynth to its limits, stressing the kernel/scheduler/fs/etc to new heights!.
I just wish some pkgs didn't hit some heavy ( #ghc #rust ), and that maybe some of the bigger projects ( #Firefox ?) could, someday, lend some support so you could have time to focus in other areas that are lacking 🖒

@vermaden I have previously used ZFS with 512 MB of RAM without encountering significant issues - though it was a bit slow, the performance was acceptable.
However, this time around, I'll be working with an old Alix system that only has 256 MB of RAM. Despite its limited memory capacity and the client's insistence on using it, I'll need to proceed with this hardware choice. Since the Alix system utilizes the i386 architecture, I'm inclined to opt for a more lightweight operating system. #DragonflyBSD is exclusively available for amd64 architecture, which eliminates it as a viable option.
Considering these factors, I am contemplating the use of #NetBSD for this setup
#DragonflyBSD launched https://bsd.cafe wich is going to become «a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD».
@herrbischoff BTW I am not on the team so don't know all the details. Today's USB is actually pretty decent performance. But the other idea being that a Live environment becomes taxing on the usb. But again it is a choice. 🤷🏾♂️
I think in the end memory wise it was more optimal for perf reasons. If you don't want all the graphical stuff you could go with standard FreeBSD or similar (like #dragonflybsd) which is specifically geared for that.
This is a 2013 #Apple #MacBook Pro Retina - born unlucky, it has encountered many hardware issues - but it has been serving in the office for handling some minor tasks. #MacOS is now outdated, so I've decided to install a #BSD on it.
However, I'm still unsure about which one to choose. I might experiment with all of them on four external disks and evaluate their performance.

Good evening, friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse.
Today has been a beautiful sunny day, not too hot, and I decided to take a break and relax, anticipating another busy week ahead.
While performing a #duperemove on a #btrfs file system (and it seems that soon this will be possible on #zfs too!), I'm reading about the progress #hammer2 is making on #OpenBSD (https://github.com/kusumi/openbsd_hammer2). This would be a winning combination, as the versatility of the excellent file system of #DragonflyBSD and the security of #OpenBSD would be an incredibly powerful union. Let's hope the development continues smoothly without any major issues!

What's your favourite #BSD? And why?
Please boost!

Good morning, BSD.cafe! Less than 24 hours since the launch of our community and we're already 14 members strong. I'm thrilled with the enthusiasm shown for the project and the proposals received for new services to implement at BSD.cafe. Let's keep moving forward with optimism and excitement!

🌟 Introducing BSD.cafe 🌟
Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.
BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.
The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.
The server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on #FreeBSD. Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also installed but not yet activated to move individual jails to different machines.
Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.
Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via #ipv6.
The instance starts empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.
Apart from my user (@stefano@bsd.cafe), I've added a bot from the beginning named "FreeBSD Fortune" (@fbfortune), which will automatically post a #FreeBSD "fortune" every hour. More similar bots for other *BSD systems and beyond will be added as time permits.
Join me at https://mastodon.bsd.cafe to build a constructive and inclusive community—a safe and relaxing space for everyone.
Soon, I'll publish a website on https://bsd.cafe with an overview of tools, services, rules, uptime, and more.

@ablackcatstail not even close to committing suicide or anything like that, but please believe me when I say that:
#DragonFlyBSD is my happy place
... because I really mean it.
I might get more responses over here:
Invoking all #bsd people (or rather, some :P) (I guess some specific tags are useful, so #freebsd #netbsd #openbsd #dragonflybsd and a bunch more)
I am, for the time being, a Linux user (cringe). I want to make a lightweight desktop environment (but it could be any non-trivial project). I had a talk with myself and realized that if I want to make my project cross-platform across all Unices, I have to care about BSD (and I want to reduce the burden on someone who wants to port my project, that might one day be myself so I might as well be smart about it).
I’m well aware I can’t have dependencies on Linux-only things like systemd or PipeWire (I can make an abstraction layer over the different kinds of OSs I’m targetting). What else should I take into consideration? And no, no “make a VM with *BSD and try it there”, that’s obvious, I have {Free,Open,Net,DragonFly}BSD VMs already. I am interested in what to avoid and generally how to reduce the friction of porting. Might be an useful resource to other devs too, because I believe we should encourage BSD compatibility (too many Windows/macOS/Linux-only apps…)
Bonus, as an interesting question: what do BSD developers have to take into consideration when porting to Linux? Thank you!

@sataa @ncommander @ActionRetro @greymatter #tcsh is AFAIK the default for #FreeBSD and according to @fuchsiii it was the default for #DragonflyBSD...
@thedaemon That's ok. MidnightBSD, GhostBSD and NomadBSD are user friendly versions of FreeBSD.
#DragonFlyBSD, in the other hand, is a full #BSD OS in its own right, with its own kernel, significant changes on every kernel subsystem scheduler (LWKT/UTS), SMP implementation with kernel resource components that are fully SMP-aware and use SMP-friendly algorithms, extreme scaling, lockless allocator, bulk dports builder, filesystem and so on and so forth ...
@mah thanks!
Being a former #amiga user I do have a soft spot for #dragonflybsd
I just fear it is far a too small niche
For those Amateur Radio folks not at Dayton but in Ottawa for BSDCan and those simply interested we will have a BOF in Room 1120 at noon today.
