"By creating clearly delineated times for work and for play, we are able to burn off that nervous energy, so we can focus our cognitive resources singularly on the task at hand when it’s time to work. This also means that when we play, having done our work at our best, we can more easily allow ourselves to play without shame."
I am so impressed with the way the #drawabox materials are presented! The above quote is from Lesson 0.
Was struggling with drawing ellipses all afternoon and a member of the #drawabox community had a great tip: draw them the opposite direction!
Drawing them counterclockwise works much better for me!
@Cbfoley It's amazing how we tend to think that everyone's like us. Until recently I thought that when someone was telling me to, eg, picture myself on a beach with the calming sound of the sea in the background, they were speaking metaphorically. After all, I couldn't do that so what other explanation was there? What really surprised me was learning yesterday that the artist who set up the #DrawABox course also suffers from #aphantasia. I thought that would stop one being an artist.
I've heard about drawabox.com for maybe about 2 years now but finally got around to checking it out last week.
Oh wow. Like, I really wish I'd started doing the work sooner, but the exercises are exactly what I need right now to push my art to the next level.
If you want to improve your confidence in your line work and pen drawing, I can't recommend it enough!

Let's see how long I keep up with learning to draw this year.
I started with the #DrawABox lessons yesterday, a different approach from the last couple of tries. If I fail this time, I think I should “draw my conclusions”. 😅
Some superimposed lines for the first #drawabox lesson. Drawing with my shoulder is sore making, taking it slow.
Committed to starting #drawabox today. Which I did, but only watched the videos and read the intro which took a couple hours! So, no actual drawing.
But that's okay. Tomorrow is another day.

My freehand long lines need a lot of work. Today, in pen. The Archer & Olive gel pens that came in the December box write really smoothly - no weird skips/globs and they're missing the typical gel-pen "must clean nib before each use". I wish I could get a set in earth-tones. #archerAndOlive #pen #tradtionalArt #drawing #drawabox #sketch #sketchbook

Freehand drawing (no ruler). It's been a lot of years since playing with DrawABox and doing freehand straight lines. They came out better than I expected, but missed the target dots a lot. #drawing #traditionalart #drawabox #pencil

Haven't posted in a bit too long, but climbing back on the horse again. I'm sure you can see why this one was a bit intimidating.
Not that this is surprising. Even the creator of Draw A Box says it's too hard for someone at the level he's assigning it, and doesn't expect it to be done perfectly, or even well. And in that, I succeeded!
It's done. That's enough.

Hoo boy, is this stuff rough.
To explain, the first image (the tidy one) is basically boxes in two point perspective using a ruler and drawing all the lines to their respective vanishing points. Easy stuff, kinda nostalgic really.
The other two involve drawing the boxes freehand in one point perspective and doing all the sides without a ruler, then using a different colour to see how close I got.
Frankly, I'm impressed I got it right at all.

@Curator dearest oracle of art, curator of beauty, is there a community on here doing #drawabox? Cant see any hashtag but I am on a new instance! (https://drawabox.com/)
It's ellipse day, so here's some ellipses.
They're pretty rough, but that's to be expected at this stage. More than anything they're a benchmark of where I am at the start, and as my draughtsmanship improves, I can go back and compare as I wish.
Also, once I'm through the first lesson in a couple of days, I'll be doing shorter versions of a lot of this stuff as warmups from then on, which should also make a difference.

First post here on Artisan.chat. Welcome to me.
This sort of thing is a lot of what you'll see on my account for the first little while, basically just exercises from #DrawABox as I start my art journey all the way from the beginning, as if I know nothing.
And going by the results so far, that isn't inaccurate.

I've been doing the 250 box challenge for a while now. 155 boxes done now, less than 100 left! #DrawABox
