Even if we all worked in synch, we can't make changes.

We can and always do help, but we clearly need more of the 85% to join. We can't do it all alone.

If collectively we're the majority, then why do our collective politics and policies not reflect that?

We didn't put ourselves here, and we're not keeping ourselves here.

The presents, and : Variations on an theme.

exception. Owning .

Today in Labor History May 26, 1857: Dred Scott was freed from slavery. Scott is most well-known because of the infamous Dred Scott Supreme Court decision. He had sued for his family’s freedom, arguing that they had lived four years in the north, where slavery was illegal. The Court ruled 7-2 that people of African descent weren’t U.S. citizens and thus had no standing before the court. Scott’s lawsuit was funded by the children of Peter Blow, who had turned against slavery in the years since their father had sold the Scotts to John Emerson. After the ruling, Emerson’s wife and her new husband, who was an abolitionist, deeded the Scotts back to the Blow children. They manumitted the Scotts on May 26, 1857. However, Dred Scott died from tuberculosis fourteen months later.

@doctorjaymarie You’re not amused because the decision was an egregious denial of basic human dignity or that it’s tragically obvious had been on the court at that time he would have certainly voted in favor of & denying agency for specific groups in America by race as he is now denying rights based on gender? Or is it something else?

@doctorjaymarie Contrary to popular opinion, did not participate in the decision saying aren’t American citizens. He was barely out of law school in 1857.

That court ruled in that Black people were "so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect, and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit":

Small wonder that the Supreme Court was considered "the last stronghold of Southern power." The court consistently ruled against Lincoln and Lincoln simply ignored their rulings:

Today in Labor History March 6, 1857: The Dred Scott decision by the U.S. Supreme Court opened up federal territories to slavery and denied citizenship to blacks. Tim Scott for POTUS?
Hell, no. The man’s a token of the GOP’s (ongoing) depreciation. He sets He’s a Republican tool, who sets back Black people on a daily basis. I call him “DREAD Scott,” because he lacks the integrity of a “Dred Scott.” If one’s a descendant of the other, the family has fallen far.

2/4 Well, she was quite a character...

Susan Rebecca (maiden name Ruland) had eight children, but only three of them survived to the start of the : John Ruland Freligh (a soldier), William Violette Freligh (6-8yo during War), and Lizzie (8-10yo during the War).

Rebecca smuggled medicine (probably Quinine) inside the puffy buttons on her dress. Female spies were common during that war-- women could cross enemy lines with less chance of being searched. They even hid messages inside their elaborate hairstyles. We think Rebecca MIGHT have taken her daughter along for some crossings, to look less suspicious.

At one point, she was captured by the Union. But she escaped by "bribing and NAGGING" until the guards let her go.😄

She proudly entertained Jefferson Davis and Confederate Troops at their home.

Her father, Judge John Ruland, was the Clerk who signed the infamous ruling, so her pro-slavery opinions ran in the family.

"Taney’s opinion, which also stated that Congress could not prohibit slavery from U.S. territories, came to be viewed as one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in history."
Taney argued the decision based on "original intent." It was the first time the Supreme Court articulated this argument. This is of course a hallowed principle of conservative jurisprudence. If Dred Scott was the worst Supreme Court decision in history, why do conservatives base their reasoning on it?
