Granted that's just the "core" system: with only , and as client...

Nothing else...

It can barely get on and to -reachable hosts.

Not much more.

So it'll turn your and up into a SSH-Terminal not dissimilar from classic terminals like the ...

Wow, @linux does actually improve efficiency over time...

I just compiled a minimal kernel 6.5 for OS/1337 targeting instead of and the resulting binary is even 10kB smaller than the one for 6.4.12...

For real: That's awesome cuz it allows me to make the version for a reality and still have & as client in it...

Cudos to @torvalds and the maintainers for that:
They really did cleanup the codebase and made it |ler!

@ncommander OFC, that is a concern if RAM is a limiting factor...

And I do know that most distros like @ubuntu will zse shared libraries as they have way more programs needing them at the same time, so I don't think that's bad on their part.

Whereas in my case of OS/1337 the version (1440kB) literally only contains as Kernel, as Userland and as SSH-Client and nothing else.

It's basically turning a machine into a "SSH-Terminal" and that's it.

So for those asking, the Version of OS/1337 will be a better with & support and packing in as client.

So you could at the very least use it as a ...

Sadly this means it will require at least an and won't run on an anymore as a lot of memory was eaten up by woraround code in the kernel...

YOS!

6.4.12 (with networking support!) + 0.8.10 in 980k using -cross-i686

This is awesome...

Seems like I can fit as client on the 3,5" as well...

I guess it would've been possible to make for a as well... ?

@whitekiba I mean I don't look for computational efficiency....

OFC modern crypto needs a lot of processing power...

But I'd even consider doing a and making a script that 's as a working hack...

Even if that makes it a sort-of "" [ meets ] workaround...

@whitekiba Personally I just want to have a "" distro that at least works as an "" or ...

But sadly I really hit a brick wall getting stuff optimized so that I can fit the absolute bare minimums in there...

After all, I just want a minimal that offers me a and can run as client and let the do the boring userland housekeeping.

Any advice?

OS/1337 development:
Using the oldest still maintained did yield about 25% size reduction for it's binary...

The good news: I basically have a new size record with the same settings: 551kB for the Kernel and 402k for toybox - both targeting systems.

The bad news: I've got neither network nor USB support at all!

And I think Network support and having as minimal client is kinda necessary for to work as a "" system at all.

@beforewisdom
Not that I don't think is bad - far from it.

But considering that can do 17 MB apparently with default userland and 23 MB with + I do want to get things to just work without being able to at least have working and being able to mount shares or at least into things using .

I'm setting up an with encrypted () root partition (an volume) The /boot partition is left *unencrypted*. I want to decrypt my root partition through .

I'm following this guide, with and : s.42l.fr/bFl-G4_w

I'm facing two big problems:
1 - dropbear starts *after* a passphrase is provided for the root partition;

2 - dropbear fails to load dropbear_dss_host_key and dropbear_ed25519_host_key.

When I use LUKS to encrypt the root partition on my Linux server, I need to supply the crypt passphrase at boot to unlock the system for startup to continue and get to login. That's OK if I'm sitting in front of a keyboard and display. But what if it's a headless server or located in a remote location?

Enter Dropbear. Install this tiny SSH server into the server's initramfs, and use SSH keys to login from a client at boot and unlock:

This HOWTO is dated 2017 but can confirm it still works today using Debian 12. It was *so* helpful getting the wireless interface setup on my home server initramfs so that I could remotely unlock a LUKS-encrypted root partition using Dropbear:

I remotely unlock a LUKS-encrypted root on my Debian home server using a Dropbear initramfs. Before I did this over wired ethernet.

Its a bit trickier to get this working over *wireless*, and this HOWTO was a big help!

Oh and, joy of joys, the only actual tweak I put on there, to link to /usr/bin/scp so scp would work, has done its job so I can retrieve logs the easy way.

Ons sad thing: I can't find its SOC's TRM. I'd hoped to be able to find out the easy way how independent its ethernet ports are. I'll have to rummage round in its kernel config instead. Doesn't matter, it's all fun from now on!
