Western WA has been droughty the past few summers, so I've had years to compare how different trees and bushes handle the dry conditions. In case you're interested, these do very well in the dry heat without needing supplemental water:
- Corkbark Fir
- Balsam Fir
- Grand Fir
- Oregon White Oak
- Western Hemlock
- Deodar Cedar
- Huckleberry (also tolerates shade)
- Oregon Grape

Comfrey leaves and flowers. I love how a freshly torn comfrey leaf smells like cucumber.

@bastianallgeier From California: There is lots of information on drought-tolerant plants and gardening techniques available from our University of California Cooperative Extension service.

I know this is designed for the various California biomes, but it might be of help. We have had a a lot of "practice."

Just came across this free book in PDF about landscape gardening by the. Coachella Valley Water District. Might pick up a few tricks for a drought tolerant Los Angeles garden.

The is blooming. The foliage on this is nice enough, but the flowers are a nice bonus.

After the rain (or between…more due later today) the yard greens out and the narcissus pokes it’s head out. I’m glad to have interplanted them with the native buckwheat.
