August. The harvest season has shifted into full swing, the change in the time of sunrise and sunset is noticeable. The searing, unforgiving heat of July has given way to some cloudy days, some evening rain. The softer flowers gave way to tough sunflowers, which continue to bloom in waves of yellow and brown, in close proximity to the tightly fisted buds of the next wave. #August #Flowers #Gardening #Druidry #sunflowers

The fringed sage, Artemisia frigida, is a member of the wormwood family. It has an amazing eucalyptus type smell and reminds me of being at the Colorado Dragonfest Pagan retreat. Because it’s a native it supports native pollinators and other insects. Because it’s amazing when dried, and not endangered, and not a plant like white sage that should be reserved to the use of specific Indigenous groups, I collect some at the end of the season for my personal use. #Druidry #NativePlants #July #Gardening

Bee balm is a delightful native in the Mint family that I have not had flower until the generous rains of this year. Monarda fistulosa var. menthifolia is also called horsemint. It also attracts butterflies and is listed as having historical culinary and medicinal uses for Indigenous people in this region. #Druidry #NativePlants #July #Gardening

The Mexican hat or prairie coneflower is a lovely, drought tolerant native that helps make my urban front yard display some of the beauty of the region’s prairies and open spaces, and provide sustenance for native pollinators! Hidden amidst the tall bluebells and sheltered between an old juniper and an enthusiastic grape-holly I have a slender native rowan-mountain ash, Sorbus scopulina. It has loved our unusual rains this year and grew taller and thicker than any year prior. In the ogham the rowan is luis or flame. In modern Irish flame is lasair and rowan is caorthann.

My secret treasure is a hazel shrub, transplanted in the shade between houses at the end of a hedge. Beaked hazel is native here but has retreated to isolated populations in remote spaces. The plum tree is generously beautiful. In the Irish Materia Medica we find this: crann na mbulas, the bullace or wild plum. In modern Irish, crann plumaí. Our native plum is Prunus americana.
