On Wednesday I was in a CERT class with the local #fire chief who talked about #safety & most common causes of fire. Made me nervous so I just pulled out my #dryer and checked the vent hose. Installed over 5 years ago & really didn't have much lint in it at all. I also have always run my dryer on low because the higher heat settings make the clothes so hot I'm irrationally afraid the clothes will catch fire! (Obviously, I do know that if that were true everyone would be having dryer fires.)

I can't tell if my hoodie is cold or still damp.

A few items I have found useful over the years:

Magnets from the head mechanism of failed hard drives. Basically the "fridge magnet of doom". Screws don't get lost.

A Luer Lock syringe filled with grease, with a blunt tipped, large gauge "glue applicator" needle. Great for repacking bike wheel bearings.

A set of forceps from my last ER visit. They just throw these away, so after my stitches, I asked them for the surgical tools. Perfect for grabbing tiny things.

At the back of the dryer, there are two pulleys that support the drum. These can be removed using snap-ring pliers.

Each pulley has a metal bushing. I cleaned and greased this inside surface, and did the same for the washers and bearing shafts.

One more pulley next to the drum motor, sits at the end of a spring-loaded tension arm, which holds the belt tight on the drum. I cleaned and greased this too.

All back together, and the dryer's squeal is gone.

Threw a load of clothes in the Maytag dryer today. But it made a terrible squealing as the drum turned!

I unplugged the 220V plug, then used a 5/16” nut driver to remove first the base plate, then the door assembly, detaching the connectors from the door switch.

A ring shaped assembly supported the front of the drum. Removing that, and then a couple screws holding the dryer's top and sides together, allowed the drum to come out.

Working on my #dryer this afternoon makes me realize that the conventional method of securing the dryer to the dryer duct is… kludgy (to say the least). A snap-on clip from the dryer to the duct would be far better.

Recently bought a new heat pump dryer - Fisher & Paykel DH8060P3 8kg dryer.
Really impressed with it so far, replaced an Electrolux which wasn't great, it took 3+ hours to dry anything.
This was also the only dryer I found that has a secondary filter in front of the condenser. Very useful if you've ever needed to clean the area near the condenser on a heat pump dryer. #dryer #clothing #laundry #washing #clothes
