Once again I am burning PTO just because I'm too tired to start work by 9:30. At least now that I'm working remotely, this happens less often, since I can set my alarm for 9 instead of 8. But still, some days it just ain't happening. On these days I have to remind myself not to be ashamed, that circadian rhythm disorders are real!, and that it's the company that's missing out by not letting me work when they'd get the best work out of me.

I have a circadian rhythm sleep disorder, now more similar to N24 (non-24), but formerly DSPD (Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder). This video made me cry. I should have watched it instead of saving it a month ago.

Feeling like 50% of my normal life happens between 7pm and 5am, not being able to function in the morning, missing events, "business hours", all the chronic illnesses & nausea. Despite years of "sleep aids" and bright light exposure.

Social structures & capitalism hate nighttime.

I'm a week into trying siesta / biphasic sleep, with the hope that it enables me to be awake before noon (and also get a little more time out of the day).

I've got severe DSPD that makes it pretty much impossible to regularly fall asleep before 4-5am.

The schedule I'm trying (with flexibility) is: 5-10am core sleep + 7-8:30pm nap

I set my alarm wrong last night, but still woke up naturally at 10:15 feeling pretty refreshed! It might be working, whoa!

If you can manage it, accepting the later schedule is the least effort by far. But it's not a good fit for everyone's life. So managing it with a routine is a commonly chosen path. Also not everybody responds to the routine based treatments. Even if you do respond to them, it can be tough, one or two late nights can set you back days or even weeks.

What follows is my experience of and what I have found helpful.

So let's talk a little about , essentially it's a disorder where the time when your body will successfully sleep is substantially delayed in comparison to what society expects of you. Like a permanent form of jet lag.

Naturally this leads to difficulties functioning on a "normal" schedule. There are essentially two approaches to dealing with it: accept the later schedule, or have a routine that advances your circadian rhythm.

I have , a much misunderstood circadian rhythm sleep disorder, no I can't just go to bed earlier, yes the strange routine is essential.

I made the mistake of going to bed early because the pain was too much. I slept for three hours and then woke up at 3am (my equivalent of an evening nap).

I tried to go back to sleep but gave up at 5am and got up.

Now I don't know if today is normal pain, extra pain, socialising pain (from a friend coming over), or lack of sleep pain.

But I have chocolate cornflake clusters (from friend) to snack on and a memory of spending fun time with a friend, so it's not all bad.

I just completed a research questionnaire as part of a study on sleep. The bias of the questions towards diurnal behaviour meant I had to give best approximation answers for almost all of it and none of my answers match my natural pattern accurately.

This once again shows to me the lack of understanding of extreme chronic delayed sleep phase disorders even by academics in the field, let alone that of normal general medical personnel or laypeople.

Why's nobody in the UK around?

Oh yeah it's 4:30am, they're mostly in bed. I should probably put some time into finding some more Canadians to follow at some point.

Oh yeah, my left ankle aches...oh yeah my left arm aches... oh yeah my right arm aches... oh yeah my neck aches... as I move about or do things.

Pretty sure my brain's covered almost every major body part now.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I probably should try and get some sleep.

I had a guest over yesterday and didn't turn my homebrew circadian lighting back on after. I live in a windowless room and stayed busy therein, and by 5pm it felt like 9pm and I was reacting to the clock with disbelief. I subsequently woke up 5 hours early (which for me means midnight) wondering why I couldn't sleep.

This photoperiod dependency is no joke. Before I figured out the lighting component of my sleep management, I fit the criteria for because I was not getting sufficient light.

After puberty I developed textbook . Typical sleep cycle - when I had one - of 4am til noon. Five alarms around the room didn't work. I even failed to graduate high school because I couldn't wake up early enough once kicked out of my dad's house.

Anyway it's been many months since this was a problem now that I have adequate light & microdose melatonin... until last month. I can't wake earlier than 6:40 to save my life. I'm basically in a stupor before then. Frustrating.

@Antanicus The problem is amplified because we stay indoors during the day (dim) and light our buildings too brightly at night. I'll always be a night owl, but I realized that electric light is what makes it unreasonable. I was a 4am-noon sleeper and checked every box for .

I realized this because I sync to the sun within 3 days whenever I live outdoors (if I avoid booze). After MANY years, I have my cycle under control with light management & microdose melatonin.

I have objections to calling delayed sleep phase a "disorder" - it's very culture-dependent - but the first time I read about it, back when it was a "syndrome," just knowing that this was a known sleep pattern for which I had every single symptom, and not just me being a loser, meant a lot.

Also, there's the ever-increasing mountain of evidence that is strongly related to variations in human circadian clock function.
