My favourite bit of phone tech that didn't belong properly in either the analog or digital universes was pushbutton phones that had a selector switch that let you configure them to emit #DTMF tones OR #pulse trains. I had one; phone company charged $2 extra per month for DTMF support.

Thanks, I think, to the ham radio people it seems you can insanely cheap things from many online vendors which go from touch tone audio in to digital out, including relay controls and stuff. One less microprocessor. I have been using pixels in the screen of my computer to control robots from teh browser with #p5js but now I think I'm switching most things over to DTMF, also with p5js.
