Ronnie Drew died on 16 August 2008 in St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin. He was a founder member of the Dubliners from 1962 to 1974. He rejoined in 1979 but then left for good in 1995.Ronnie Drew was born in Dún Laoghaire in 1934. Although he was so intimately associated with being a 'Dubliner', he would sometimes say, "I was born and grew up in Dún Laoghaire, and no true Dubliner would accept that at all!"

The Bachelor's Walk massacre occurred in Dublin, on 26 July 1914, when a column of troops of the King's Own Scottish Borderers were accosted by a crowd on Bachelor's Walk following the Howth gun-running operation. The troops attacked protesters with rifle fire and bayonets - resulting in the deaths of four civilians and injuries to 30 more. Luke Kelly senior, the father of Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, was one of the wounded.

John Sheahan was born on 19th May 1939 in Dublin. He is an Irish musician and composer and the last surviving member of the definitive five-member line-up of The Dubliners. He joined The Dubliners in 1964 and played with them until 2012 when The Dubliners' name was retired following the death of founding member Barney McKenna.

Preparing for my plan to read Joyce this year. I upgraded my trusty Penguin paperback of Ulysses with the chonky Cambridge edition, which is lovely, and scored the Killeen which I recall was rare/impossible to find during uni days. The rest have lurked on shelves for ages: 2023 is the time. Luke Kelly died on 30 January 1984 in Dublin aged just 43 years old. His gravestone in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, bears the inscription: "Luke Kelly – Dubliner".

This is a interesting article by Fintan O'Toole about Ireland's membership of the EU and what it meant for Ireland generally and it's relationship with Britain.
One fascinating take away: Irish membership of the EU was opposed at the time by John B Keane, Luke Kelly and Michael D Higgins.
