The cash bail system in the United States is based on the mistaken notion that, without holding someone’s money hostage, they wouldn’t show up for their court date. There’s not much evidence to support this, and ample evidence that, in effect, cash bail serves to allow poor people to be locked up without trial, simply because they are poor. When those people are being held in a place like Rikers – sometimes for years – the nightmarish conditions can drive them to suicide, or to giving a false confession just to be able to return to their lives in some way. Olayemi Olurin is among other things, an attorney and abolitionist who’s made a name for herself recently with her cutting political commentary. She’s been very vocal about the ongoing human rights violation that is the jail on Rikers Island, and this clip from her new show does a good job making the case to shut down Rikers, and end cash bail:

@TonyStark It's useful to know, that SCOTUS confirmed for the first time in Gitlow v. New York, that "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom... of the press..." also applies to states, through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment — which today's rebel "Republicans" would certainly love to see repealed.
So when DeSantis wants to gag the free press, SCOTUS should tell him to FO.

I also object to Fareed’s conflation of the terms “economic #migrant” and “illegal migrant ”. These are not at all synonymous. 1. "We got a call" is NOT probably cause.
2. That "guard" AND copes should be immediately fired if they haven't already for violating the rights of a terminal patient.
3. The doctor should be called out on the carpet as well. She has no business telling the patient "nobody is going to help you if you keep recording". She inserted herself where she did not belong. She was not acting on behalf of the patient.
