@markcooper Thanks for the link. Interesting book, but from a quick skim I think equating 'suffering' to pain is far too narrow if not misleading. According to the Dalai Lama and others, a better definition of is *unsatisfactoriness*

New Year's Resolution #1: Have a sit every day even if it's literally just for 10 minutes. Settle the mind and tune into awareness and drop the ceaseless storylines going through my awareness. Not necessarily looking for enlightenment here. Just trying to dial down the a bit. (Prediction: I will top out at 80% of days.)

Enough really is enough, yet we always want more. So we experience dukkha - things being unsatisfactory.

The said we should treat praise & condemnation with , as winds that blow first this way, then that--neither permanent, neither self. I am in danger of being dropped because my rates are so abysmal--my Ws are killing me--& have been orienting my mind & my life toward no longer after this next term. Then I open my email this morning & find I've been nominated by a couple of my students for a teaching award.

I read Jack Kornfield’s "After the Ecstasy, the Laundry", some accounts from meditators telling their experiences.

It made me realize one can describe an experience with the most inspiring words, and still be very much the subject of and .

Now, the real question is how much of the words of the masters are the same? Are we fantasizing their experience of enlightenment? Why would it be more important than a modern telling of the same kind?

My favourite quote from my favourite nonfiction book:

"There is so much baggage we burden ourselves with over the years that keeps us from seeing things the way they are. Some baggage we carry with us for a single thought, some for years, and some for lifetimes. But there isn't one piece that isn't our own creation."

Andre Malraux asked a priest: "You've spent 50 years listening to people in the secrecy of the confessional. What have you learned about the human soul?"

The priest answered: "Two things. First of all, people are much more unhappy than one thinks. And second, there is no such thing as grown-ups."
