It's crazy the kind of stuff people throw away. We were camping last weekend and as we were packing up I found this large tent by the dumpster.

What's wrong with it?

The slide for the zipper on one of the doors fell apart (I found half of it). they duct taped that door door shut. Currently applying GooGone to get the sticky shit off. I'll have to stop at a fabric store to get a new slider. #dumpsterdiving #camping

1) in Burlington for a conference, staying with host who, unknown to me, were also hosting a family of farmers who children arose at 5am. Well, seeing as how I;d arrived at my hosts after dumpstering some great chocolates around 4am and was unable to sleep, I got up and shared my loot with the kids who all went hyper. Needless to say I changed host houses after that.

2) The Mt Vernon Safeway dumpster was where i took my future wife, on our way to work as river guides on the east side. My hunter/gatherer skills must've impressed her, 25 years ago, and she still tells this as the story of one of our first dates.

#DumpsterDiving story #2: Bellingham, WA Safeway 1986. I'm loading wooden fruit boxes full of food up on the dumpster railing when the manager comes out and orders me to leave. I calmly keep lifting the boxes up, balancing them on the edge. He reads my old van's license plate out loud as if he's memorizing it and says he'll call the cops.

At that time, Bellingham was experiencing serious homelessness and hunger and it was in the news a lot.
"Okay, let me know if you're going to call the cops. I'll pull around front and wait so all your customers can see all the food you throw away while so many are hungry," I said, calmly, now moving the boxes to my van. "I'm sure you'd like to have protesters outside your store, right?"

"I call the cops 3 time/week and that never happens," he said.
"You've never called them on *me*," I said, and explained that I was one of those protesters sitting in trees and knew very well how to organize protests.

"I don't have time for this!" he says angrily and shuts the door.

Does anybody know a place that sells 12V/2A DC converters with grounded connectors?

I have plenty of ungrounded (2-plug) ones salvaged from my #dumpsterdiving days, but they interfere with the Audio recording by adding static (similar to many laptops when plugged in).

I'm looking for something like the one in the picture, but this specific one is 6A and I'm afraid it might be too much current for it...

Preferably one that sells in the european market? :D

This was my first camera. It was 2005. I was 24, just dropped out of college for the third time, and I was working at the local newspaper on their printing press. I was about to drop a forklift of garbage in the dumpster when I saw a big pile of darkroom equipment. I parked the forklift, and jumped in the dumpster, and salvaged everything i could. There were film prints from the 60s and 70s, half an enlarger, a bunch of filters and a pair of Nikon FM2 cameras. One was pretty much trashed, but the other needed a new battery and a solid cleaning.

After I got home from work that morning, I sorted everything out. I had a working camera with a pair of decent lenses. The label ring had fallen off this lens a long time ago, but it was still a crisp telephoto that didn't grind or stutter when I focused it. On the bottom, someone engraved the newspaper's name and phone number. Give 'em a call. Tell them I said so long, and thanks for all the fish.

I had never really done much photography. I took a cool photo of an amusement park once on a rangefinder, but that was really it. But this camera? It opened up something inside of me. I had no idea what I was doing, but within a few months, I was back in school and enrolled in every photography class the college had to offer.

I spent some time today between coding sessions, upstairs, thinking and trying things. Used salvaged wood as supports for a bit of raised floor... All good, good.

My daily struggle: part of me wants pure #minimalism, while part wants to save as many computers as possible from the trash.

What could be an "elegant solution" to this? I thought about opening a "community-shred LAN House" of sorts, but have neither the real estate or the network for it. Perhaps I'll always be a hoarder in some level?

At work people are clearing the office from pre-pandemic leftovers so I did some #DumpsterDiving.

I'm not a fan of protein shakes but I found a #vegan one, expired in 2019, and I took it. It was ok. No food poisoning so far (I ate it a few days ago already).
