The remarkably well-preserved Kildonan Dun, on the Kintyre coast north of Campbeltown. Roughly D-shaped, it would have served as a fortified farmstead when first built, the better part of two thousand years ago. #Celtic #HillfortsWednesday: Dun Bhuirgh is an #IronAge fortified settlement on the #IsleOfHarris with a panoramic view of the Sound of Taransay. The #dun was built on a site which already had power connotations in the Bronze Age, as cup marks only 50m behind the dun show.

# Rerigonium (literally 'very royal place'), is already shown on Ptolemy's map of the world. This #dun or royal court of the #Celtic #Novantae tribe is a strong contender for the site of Pen Rhionydd, referred to in the Welsh Triads as one of the 'three thrones of Britain' associated with the legendary #KingArthur, and may also have been the caput of the sub-Roman #Brythonic kingdom of #Rheged. #Rerigonium's exact position is uncertain except that it was 'on #LochRyan', close to modern day #Stranraer.
