All these shuck oysters in #theDunbarCannery. They began work about 3:00 A.M., and worked until about 5:00 P.M. with half an hour for lunch at noon. The great hill of oyster shells is but part of one season's product. Location: #Dunbar, #Louisiana.

An idle #showerthought :

The internet has been amazing for scaling the spread of information.

But a human being is still intrinsically limited in its capacity for authentic empathy.

If #Dunbar's Number is actually a real thing, then we've created a monstrosity of a problem in exponentially (#Metcalf's Law) scaling the problems we create for ourselves without the ability to add capacity for empathy.

There simply aren't enough spoons to eat all the shit the internet creates.

@mikey I think the #Dunbar number should make a good guideline for the number of people on an instance vs number of admins taking care of it.

1 admin? 150 users
2 admins? 300 users

This could be further combined with Pareto's principle (the 80-20 rule) and/or the power law to further increase the number of potential users.

1 admin? 150 power users, or 750 total users

Alternatively, if you apply the 1-9-90 principle, you could have as many as 1500 users per admin, perhaps?

185 years ago today. John Muir, who convinced US President Theodore Roosevelt that Yosemite should be protected as a national park, was born in Dunbar in East Lothian on 21 April 1838.
