Dunbar was an anthropologist, not a neuroanatomy researcher, and Dunbar's Number was an ethnographical observation, not a biological one.
"Your social life has a biological limit: 150. That’s the number—Dunbar’s number, proposed by the British psychologist Robin Dunbar three decades ago—of people with whom you can have meaningful relationships."
#IanBogost, 2021
That's your opening? Not off too a great start there Ian.
@sam_liban , gern.
Abschließend noch ein kurzer Selbsttest: Wie viele Menschen in Deinem direkten familiären, privaten und beruflichen Umfeld - also maximal #DunbarsNumber - leben Deiner Meinung nach in einer verengten Bubble?
@bstacey @DarlavdRiet @JamesGleick @ftrain Even if #DunbarsNumber exists, it’s not clear it means much? As #DavidGraeber and #DavidWengrow wrote, it’s not just modern cities or sports teams that have stretched far beyond any supposed limit. Native Americans or Australians would long ago travel half a continent to hang out with fellow clan members they weren’t related to and hadn’t met. Dunbar hasn’t limited humans for millennia, if he ever did.

@crasher35 @samir @realn2s max practical size of primate tribes incl #HomoSapiens #DunbarsNumber ? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number This is overcome in some ways by cities and complex human societies
Came across some research challenging the famous Dunbar's Number theory. Had a little giggle at this sassy sentence:
"[Dunbar's number] has had consequences such as the Swedish Tax Authority restructuring their offices to stay within the 150-person limit, with the implicit but hopefully unintended assumption that their employees have neither family nor friends outside work."

“One thing seems certain: we need to pass beyond the information scaling threshold. This means finding new ways to think together with the internet. And a future where we own our second brains seems brighter than one where we don’t.”
