Article on local Singapore researchers doing biodiversity work on dung beetles.

"Tunnellers are more frequently found in Singapore and South-east Asia. These dung beetles are known for digging tunnels beneath a pile of dung and moving balls of dung underground to lay their eggs."

Just dug this out for someone on twtr, thought you might like to see too. I love these beneficent beasts.

Every one of these at work is a few less disease-carrying flies bothering stock or infecting your food or biting you.

, Southern Spain, approx 2002. Found rolling goat dung on a dry river bed. Photo on my hand. Digital image sizes were a lot smaller in those days.

Hey , make sure you don't miss our new Conversation with Marie Dacke where she talks about her experiences of working in South Africa with dung beetles, establishing a new field site recently in Sardinia and the key experiments that confirmed that dung beetles can navigate by star light

Pt1

I recently finished Forget Me Not by Sophie Pavelle. She goes on an to see 10 endangered creatures in the . She travels as eco friendly as possible.

Each creature is not necessarily a well known one or is not in the spotlight or a poster child for the wildlife world. Yet each one is shown it's place in the world, the impact the loss of them would have, the way their decline is showing what is lacking in that area. From , to to .

But it was the last chapter that hits hard. She mentions how humans tend to have to use numbers in order to explain the importance of the loss of an animal, a plant or place. How much it would cost us if the bees were gone or how sea grass meadows will save billions by pulling carbon down. Yet she poses the question as why do they have to be monetarily important for them to be saved.

Getting the hang of taking photos with the microscope and focus stacking them to make a visual guide to dung beetles for NYSIPM.

File under awesome duties as assigned.

I did lurk around near the microscope hoping to help. Now the whole collection is in my care for a bit.

Just back from South Africa for the first shoot of a new cinema doc I’m very grateful to be the DP of, to be titled Guardians of the Microcosm.
It’s a film about the roles insects play in our human world, how our activities are decimating them, and what we need to do to stave off disaster.
We went to South Africa to film dung beetles, without whom much of the world would literally be covered in shit.

Hi!I am an -ary biologist interested in using and developing software for , recently especially for testing of models.

I'm currently a postdoc at Virginia Tech, trying to add insights from my previous work towards
for drivers of diversification in order to bridge the gap between micro- and macro-ecology and -evolution.

I work on but love venturing into other systems in collabs.

On the fantastic navigational skills of the dung beetle.

"[I]t’s the sun that steers the movement of dung beetles. And so does light from the moon, and from the distant stars of the Milky Way. With a life devoted to excrement but guided by the heavens, dung beetles might embody the famed Oscar Wilde quote, “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”"
