s1e10 (1973) - 5/10

🔲 Chuckles are thin on the ground in this episode. The story, where Dusty is mistaken for an Indian chief’s long-lost son, drives the action. There isn’t much for Dusty to do except react to the predicament he’s in. Over and over. And over. And there’s not much for the rest of regulars to do. Except Callaghan, who puts a hairbrained plan in motion to get his little buddy back.

🔲 The show has strengths. But this script doesn’t play to them.

This feels like the first episode (pilot).

1️⃣ The early scenes do a lot to introduce the premise of the series, and the characters are slightly more formal with one another.

2️⃣ It’s shot on location. No studio sets made to look like the outdoors. And it looks great. Particularly when there are rolling hills in the background, or a strong breeze is blowing. Which is most of the time.

One of the better episodes.

✅ Most of the show’s plots are deliberately silly but this one is basically an adventure story with jokes. And real danger, as the gang are (one by one) kidnapped by two dangerous outlaws. All the regulars are given stuff to do, and there are plenty of chuckles.

📺 My 273rd TV episode of 2023. Averaging 2h17m of TV, per day.

1️⃣ Quite a busy episode, this one. First half is driven by the discovery of a treasure map, which divides the little group. Second half has everyone thinking that Dusty has been killed by a bear!

2️⃣ Dusty waking Callahan late at night and being taken for a ghost is the comedy highlight, but it’s an amusing 24 minutes from start to finish. There’s always something happening, and everyone in the cast is given something to do.
