A closer look at galaxy M64's outer disk shows that it came from a smaller #dwarfgalaxy @arxiv @AAS_Office https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.17135 https://phys.org/news/2023-05-closer-galaxy-m64-outer-disk.html
And here is what a quick reduction of a #Keck echelle spectrum looks like, with the sky emission taken out: this is from a #DwarfGalaxy in the #VirgoCluster observed earlier tonight; the interest here is in the absorption lines.

An article accepted for publication in the journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society" reports a study of a dwarf galaxy cataloged as HIPASS J1131–31 that is relatively close but has the characteristics of a primordial galaxy. They nicknamed it Peekaboo because it peeks out from behind a bright star that hid it for a long time and made it difficult to identify.

@coreyspowell When a #SpiralGalaxy is approached by a much smaller companion, such as a #DwarfGalaxy, the larger #Galaxy's uneven gravitational pull will start to severely distort the smaller star system. Over the course of a few billion years, tendril-like structures develop.
