The first preprint of work led by our group is now out!!!
Led by Jess Pearce who's starting her PhD at UWA soon, we explored the impact of different settings in the popular denoiser DADA2 on biological insights
Different ASV pooling settings lead to different number of ASVs, which lead to different numbers of observed species. The default setting finds the lowest ASVs/species

We describe a simple scalable approach for describing animal communities in @CurrentBiology: animals leave behind their DNA on leaves and it is possible to collect the 𧬠from many animals that live in a tropical rainforest simply by swabbing π ππ https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2023.06.031 r #Science #Biomonitoring #Wildlife #Animals # Vertebrates #eDNA 𧡠1/7

Imagine the possibility - thousands of stations around the world have been quietly recording biodiversity data every day ... and we never noticed. This is terrific coverage of our new paper. This article really explains the story and the scope of its potential. #biodiversity #eDNA https://www.wired.com/story/a-secret-key-to-saving-species-is-blowing-in-the-wind/
Our new paper is finally out. We demonstrate that air quality samplers are quietly collecting eDNA and may have been measuring terrestrial biodiversity for decades. We are very excited about this new project. There are literally thousands of these stations in networks all over the world filtering the air every day, every week... this could be game changing for efforts to track the planet's biodiversity. #eDNA #environmentalDNA #biodiversity https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982223005158?dgcid=author

Here's a cool new #environmental #DNA (eDNA) paper where the researchers used airborne eDNA to detect bats in roosts.
Title: Out of thin air: surveying tropical #bat roosts through air sampling of #eDNA
π https://peerj.com/articles/14772/
All detected bats (some rare) are known from previous work in the area. The authors also note non-target eDNA that likely drifted into some roosts.
eDNA is a great method for detecting hard-to-access species, and this is a good demonstration of its utility.
