@JessButler This #elife paper might be useful: https://elifesciences.org/articles/48175
The #homonaledi papers might be the first high-profile test of #eLife new model of publishing reviewed preprints.
eLife reviewed the preprint and assessed it as follows: "... would be a landmark finding. However, the evidence for these claims is considered inadequate..."

At the same time, the Daily Princetonian reports that the "groundbreaking discoveries" have been "accepted" for publication.
@MarkHanson thanks for asking! I really like the #eLife model and I'm looking very much fwd to try it myself as an author. The editorial job is probably even more demanding as the articles published are those the editor deems worth it for the readership to see. Also, the quality of the submissions will be high as nobody wants to see their work torn to shreds publicly and the reviews are published with it so thorough and insightful for the reasons above. I think it is a winning model!

@MarkRubin @BorisBarbour @sharoz @mattjhodgkinson That's why a major issue with the #eLife new publishing policy is how to establish and handle the 'version of record'.
Elife is trying an interesting experiment. Pay them $2000 and they will publish your paper provided you let them peer review it and publish the reviews. You can also review the paper in response to the reviews and they will print the revisions. https://www.science.org/content/article/journal-seeks-upend-scientific-publishing-only-reviewing-not-accepting-manuscripts #elife #peerreview #openpublishing

@JoachimGoedhart isn't it kinda weird to have a #biorxiv preprint when #eLife is now basically a #preprint server, too? 🤔 I'm still confused how this is going to work, long term...
Now that the eLife Twitter craze has cooled down a bit, I wanted to share my latest Substack post elaborating on all that was said on the eLife switch: https://open.substack.com/pub/rnaandstuff/p/gathered-thoughts-on-elife-announcement?r=1n4p5j&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post
