3) A light oral history of the sweet spot between cell phone ubiquity and home internet circa 2002, when being off work meant your time was (somewhat) your own
"Could things really have been so different just a few short decades ago? Was the last era before smartphones the last time anyone had any fun? Can a modern young person ever understand what it was like to simply watch whatever happened to be on television?"

Fascinating that this is still unsolved! I vaguely remember this. 1996 was the year I graduated with my computer programming degree & got my 1st “real job” so I was a bit busy & didn’t really pay a lot of attention to these messages.

Excellent short piece about why Mastodon at the same time feels great and really not good enough - much like the early internet... and we need some kind of alternative way of financing this..
"if there’s a way out of corporate control of the internet, Tufekci suggests that it starts with money—both for financing alternative platforms and for creating paid jobs maintaining the underlying infrastructure on which the open internet depends."

@continuation #earlyinternet favorite memory - playing Diplomacy with strangers on some server (I don’t remember names) pre-WWW.
My first online community was #IRC, channel Portland in the 90s. We would even meet up IRL for dinners.
And here is my first website. It actually launched in 1994, the archive is a bit incomplete but what surprised me was how much it resonated with the authenticity of my #fediverse self.

One of the fun things I’ve noticed and genuinely enjoyed among fellow #fedizens here is a love for parts of the early internet.
What’re your favourite #EarlyInternet memories and experiences?

Preserving Worlds is a mini docu-series about aging virtual worlds from the #EarlyInternet in a "travelogue". In concept, it reminds me a lot of https://if50.substack.com/p/introduction
At the moment, I'm listening to it like a podcast essentially, every once in awhile turning my head to see fun polygon graphics.
