"On Savage Shores is an excellent exploration of Indigenous presence in and contribution to Europe and nascent globalization. Pennock, by recognizing and voicing a space for Indigenous Peoples in Europe, she has told a story that needs to form a part of every history class from grade school to university. I highly recommend On Savage Shores for an original and important recasting of sixteenth-century Europe. It is really a decolonizing and un-whitening approach to the past."

With its haunting melody, and the romantic myth that it was written by as a love song for , Greensleeves has remained popular over the centuries and today, is probably the best known of all .

However there is no proven connection to Henry VIII, and the earliest mention of the broadside ballad called was not until September 1580, (some 33 years after his death). It was an immediate hit, and a number of imitations and parodies were produced in the following months and years.

Our recording uses the text from 'A Handful of Pleasant Delights', 1584 - the earliest surviving source. There are many verses, some of which contain lovely descriptions of clothing and other aspects of

And that's it! Sent off the new training set and hopefully improve the issues I have encountered!
I will also use this model for the 1728 print. It's a different printing press, but overall, the two prints are very much alike, and so is the type they use.

I love Purcell's incidental music for the (now lost) play The Gordian Knot, Untied. My favourite recording of the overture is by the Aradia Ensemble/ Kevin Mallon, just wait till the fast section kicks in youtube.com/watch?v=uh7aPte_qV

Why did Alice Thornton's uncle die suddenly in autumn 1647? According to Thornton, it was because he gorged on melons grown at his South Yorkshire estates. Jo Edge examines why melons were considered so desirable - and yet so dangerous - in the early modern period. historyworkshop.org.uk/food/fo

A long time ago, I wanted to do a project on text reuse & text production strategies of . I estimated ca. 30,000 pages of printed text. It was 2009/10, and large-scale digitisation of older books had just started. was a mess, & hadn't been a thing yet. Eventually, I abandoned the project, since manually transcribing 30,000 pp. & then doing computational analysis for text similarity & re-use was unfeasible.
Imagine I wanted to do that now!

The abundant use of the absolute superlative in this text is astonishing. I'm used to literature, but these are ridiculous amounts of stringed synonyms and superlatives. Wonderful πŸ˜†!

The historian urge to begin every article with: β€œIn [date] something happened, that on the face of it was not remarkable, but actually it *was* remarkable, and I will now spend a lot of time telling you why”.
